LIGHTNING
What Is Lightning?
Lightning is a bright flash of
electricity produced by a
thunderstorm. All thunderstorms
produce lightning and are very
dangerous.

WHAT CAUSE LIGHTNING?

Lightning can happen because
there are proton, electron and
neutron in this world. Proton
load positive charge, electron
load negative charge, and
neutron load neutral charge

FACTS ABOUT LIGHTNING

Lightning is caused by an electrical charge in
the atmosphere that is unbalanced.
Opposites attract so the negative charge at
the bottom of the cloud seeks out a positive
charge to connect with.
Lightning can occur insideclouds, between
clouds and from clouds to the ground.
Around one quarter of lightning is from cloud
to ground.
Lightning strikes usually last around 1 or 2
microseconds.
Lightning contains millions of volts of
electricity.

Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. Read

The average temperature of lightning is around
20000 C (36000 F).
Lightning is usually produced by cumulonimbus
clouds that are very tall and dense.

HOW LIGHTNING CAN HAPPEN

PHASE 1

PHASE 2

PHASE 3

PHASE 1
When the ground is hot, it heats the air
above it. This warm air rises. As the air rises,
water vapour cools and forms a cloud. When
air continues to rise, the cloud gets bigger
and bigger. In the tops of the clouds,
temperature is below freezing and the water
vapour turns into ice.

PHASE 2
Now, the cloud becomes a thundercloud. Lots
of small bits of ice bump into each other as
they move around. All these collisions cause a
build up of electrical charge. Eventually, the
whole cloud fills up with electrical charges.
Lighter, positively charged particles form at
the top of the cloud. Heavier, negatively
charged particles sink to the bottom of the
cloud.

PHASE 3
LIGHTNING HAPPEN

Cloud to Cloud

Cloud to Ground

Cloud to Cloud

When the positive and negative charges

grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning
- occurs between the two charges within the
cloud. This is like a static electricity sparks
you see, but much bigger.

Cloud to Ground

A build up of positive charge builds up on the

ground beneath the cloud, attracted to the
negative charge in the bottom of the cloud. The
ground's positive charge concentrates around
anything that sticks up - trees, lightning
conductors, even people! The positive charge from
the ground connects with the negative charge from
the clouds and a spark of lightning strikes.
