m Leading supplier of gear casing covers and many gear
box components as machined parts.
m Works as vendor for many years of KOEL, MAHINDRA
TRACTOR DIV. etc.
m Its total area is about 2500sq.m,out of which machine
shop is built in about 2000sq.m approximately.
m Unit is employed with conventional machines with one
VMC and one over hanging crane.
m ÄMaterial handling system is an activity that uses the
right method to provide the right amount of the right
material at the right place, at the right time, in the right
sequence, in the right position and at the right cost´
m It doesn¶t add value to the product but add significant
element of cost.
m These cost are inevitable i.e. unavoidable
m Material handling equipment utilized in unit:
pallets,
Movable trolleys (for scrap handling)
Tractors etc.
m Orientation principle
m Unit Load principle
m Ecology principle
m Obsolesce principle
m Space utilization principle
m Safety principle
m Maintenance principle
m Facility include the location of all machines, utilities,
employee workstations, customer service areas, material
storage areas, restrooms, lunchrooms, internal walls,
offices, and computer rooms.
m Facilities planning deals with the design of plants,
structural design, layout design, handling system design
etc.
m Elements of Facility Layout
" Equipment
" Work stations
" Material storage
" Rest/break or eating area
" Offices
m Proper material handling equipment utilization.
m Line balancing.
m Proper material flow pattern
m Minimize material handling costs
m Utilize space and labor efficiently
m Safety consideration
m Reduce manufacturing cycle time or customer service
time
m Eliminate waste or redundant movement
m Facilitate the entry, exit, and placement of material,
products, or people
m Product layout
m Line layout in this unit helps to achieve:
Mass production,
Eliminate or reduce handling,
Improve the efficiency of handling,
Making the correct choice of handling equipment.
Objectives
m Effective utilization of men, machine, equipment and space
m Proper flow of material
m Minimum material handling
m correct choice of handling equipment & proper utilization of
equipment

m The only two hand pallets are used.
m One over hanging crane is used for heavy
components or for moving unit load.
m Most of the wok is manual and time consuming.
m Hence unit load and obsolesce principle are
applied.
m More use of vertical space
m Working area should be specified and marked by
yellow strips
m Packing area should be separately maintained, so
as avoid damage to workpiece
m Semi mechanized material handling equipments
should be employed to maximize space utilization
m Should safe and secure handling
