What he learned about Business

The finance is given a place of work and therefore tends to kill the
work and destroy the fundamentals of services.
That thinking first of money instead of work brings on fear of failure
and this fear blocks every avenue of business-it makes a man afraid
of competitions, of changing of his methods, or of doing anything
which might change his condition.
That the way is clear for any one who thinks first of service-of doing
the work in the best possible way.

Model- A
After the decline of model A due to rising
competition. Henry ford was convinced to make a
new model.
He involved great technical expertise. Body
design was left to his son , Edsel. The result was
the successful Ford Model A.
Total output of model-A was more than 4 million.
Henry Ford Company adopted an annual model
change system, similar to competitor (General
Motors).

Model- T
Henry Ford set out to build a car which everyone could afford to buy.
It was slow, ugly and difficult to drive, and was nick named the Tin Lizzie by
the American people.
The attraction of the Model T Ford was that its price never increased.
Costing $1200 in 1909, the price in 1928 was only $295.
By 1929 Ford was producing more than one car per minute.
Ford had a good network of dealers all over as a result sale of the cars sky
rocketed.

Wages
Think worker as a partner of the boss
Wages are limited by the business
The scale of wages depends on the productive factor of labour
Sales depends in a measure upon the wages we pay
we do not follow piece work
if you expect a man to give his time & energy, fix his wages.

Why not always have good business?

Business is always either feasting or fasting
we always had a shortage of goods but never over
production.
Because of bad manufacturing or bad financing.
Farming was reorganising.

Money & Goods:

Primary objective of a manufacturing business is to produce.
Policy of buying & selling for cash, keeping a large fund always on
hand.
One need to know little about finance.
Manufacturing is not to be confused with the banking.

Launched in England before coming to America
It was these tractors, run mostly by women
Necessity occurs because of the war broke in 1917 inn England
Focused on Pull Feature than speed
The tractor is designed purely for working on the land, and the wheels, which are fitted with spuds,
should be provided with some protection to enable them to travel on the road.

The Railroad to Nowhere

In 1920 Ford purchased the Detroit, Toledo, and Ironton Railroad (DTI)
Henry Ford recognized the strategic importance of affordable and reliable supply lines for the
uninterrupted mass production of his Model T.
Changes from steam to electric engine in 1925
FMC (Ford Motor Company) decided to sell DT&I on June 27, 1929 to Pennroad Corporation for
approximately thirty-six million dollars making FMC a thirty-one million dollar profit over their initial
five million dollar investment.

22

Ford Philosophy
Keep getting prices down. Dont focus on profits, but on growing your business by
offering better quality, for cheaper.
Putting of Services before profit
Get the product right before you begin manufacturing. Dont bring out redesigns to get
costs down, focus on reducing the manufacturing costs.
Simplify focus on a creating a few products. Ignore the 5% that want more features.
Build interchangeable parts

Influence of Henry Ford

Henry Ford created the model T which was the first car
produced for the masses. This caused the automobile to be a
necessity for living during these times.

Americans were able to go wherever they wanted. The

automobile also allowed more employment for the societys
growing population.
Henry Ford also perfected the assembly line production
method. It helped America create larger quantities of what
they were producing faster.
The assembly line also raised wages and gave shorter work
days to workers
Henry Fords mass production benefitted other industries as
well (oil, steel, rubber) because of the increasing demand of the
automobile.

The Flip Side!!

Philanthropy
Henry Fords was marked by seemingly contradictory viewpoints.
Philanthropy, no matter how noble its motive does not make for Self Reliance
Industry Organized for service removes the need for philanthropy.
Concept of no charity

Anti-Semitism
Went as far as to support a weekly newspaper, The Dearborn Independent, which
supported his views further.
In the Last chapter he mentioned:
"I know we get a lot of guff for the jew thing but honestly it's not that big of a
deal when one group of people are so different than everyone

FailuresOfHenry Ford
After 1920 ford was hit by the competitor Chevrolet
In 1931 ,due to the depression in the market the new model A
sales fell.
Back to 1928 he set out to increase the bottom line by exerting
more control over his supply chain
