MARINE

ECOSYSTE
M

Marine ecosystemsare among the largest of

Earth'saquatic ecosystems. They
includeoceans,salt marshes,intertidal
zones,estuaries,lagoons,mangroves,coral reefs,
thedeep sea, and thesea floor. They can be
contrasted withfreshwater ecosystems, which
have a lowersaltcontent. Marine waters cover
ater is referred to as the pelagic zone
two-thirds
of the
surfacethe

the Earth
nisms
that swim
through
column are known

cean floor is referred to as the benthic zone

nisms that live here are benthic organisms or benthos

Shark: Pelagic

Crab: Benthic

PROBLEMS FACED BY MARINE ECOSYSTEM :

1. Overfishing Is Draining the Life From the Water
2. Impact of climate change on marine ecosystem are :Rising sea levels, Coral Bleaching, Acidic Oceans,
Altered Lifestyle, Stormy Weather
3. Dying Coral Reefs and A Scary Downward Spiral
4. Mercury Pollution Going from Coal to Oceans to Fish to
Our Dinner Table
5. Oil Spillage
6. Changes to marine ecosystems from rising global
temperatures will have an impact on walrus and other
marine mammals

WHY PROTECT OUR MARINE ECOSYSTEM?

People need air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat,
new medicines, a climate we can live in, beauty,
inspiration and recreation. We need to know we belong to
something bigger than ourselves. We want a better future
for those we care about.
Because the oceans are the largest ecosystems on Earth,
they are the Earths largest life support systems. To
survive and prosper, we all need healthy oceans.
Oceans generate half of the oxygen people breathe.
At any given moment, more than 97% of the worlds water
resides in oceans.
Oceans provide a sixth of the animal protein people eat.
Theyre the most promising source of new medicines to
combat cancer, pain and bacterial diseases.
Living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
and reduce the impact of climate change.
The diversity and productivity of the worlds oceans is a
vital interest for humankind. Our security, our economy,
our very survival all require healthy oceans

THINGS WE CAN DO TO SAVE

MARINE ECOSYSTEM

1.Mind Your Carbon Footprint and Reduce

Energy Consumption
2.Use Fewer Plastic Products
3.Help Take Care of the Beach
4.Don't Purchase Items That Exploit Marine
Life
5.Support Organizations Working to Protect
the Ocean
6.Make Safe, Sustainable Seafood Choices
7.Take steps to decrease overfishing and
support sustainable fishing practices.
