DEFINITION

How does
Adjectives
are Used?

Attributive
- the attributive use is
the direct modifier
which precedes the
noun or pronoun.
Example:
Rose wears a dark gown.

Appositive
- the appositive use
explains the substantive
which it directly follows.
Example:
The contestant, tall, pretty,
and intelligent, won the
award.

Predicate
- the predicate use of the
adjective is to complete
the meaning of the
predicate.

Example:
The test was difficult to those
who did not review.

KINDS OF
ADJECTIVES

Descriptive
Adjective
- are those adjectives
which describes noun or
the noun phrases.
Example:

Sheena is beautiful.

Descriptive Adjectives
Colors as adjectives - Black, Blue, White, Green,
etc.
Touch as adjectives - Slippery, Sticky, etc.
Feelings as adjectives - Happy, Sad, Angry, etc.
Origin as adjectives - European, Latin, Greek,
etc.
Shapes as adjectives -Triangular, rectangular,
Square, Circular, etc.
Qualities as adjectives - Good, Bad, Average,
etc.
Time as adjectives - Yearly, Monthly, etc.

Predicative Adjective
- predicative adjectives are
those which follow a linking
verb and not placed before
a noun.

Example:

That child is young.

Personal Titles
- personal titles are adjectives where the
titles such as Mr., Master, Miss, Mrs.,
Uncle, Auntie, Lord, Dr. Prof. and so on, are
used as adjectives to describe the position
of the noun.

Example:
The classes on Friday will be
presented by Dr. Charmaine and Prof.
Apple.

Possessive Adjective
- possesive adjective is used when
the sentence shows possession or
belongingness, in this case they are
used as adjectives which modify a
noun or a pronoun unlike the
possessive pronouns.

Example:
Have you seen their house?

Demonstrative Adjective
- demonstrative adjectives
are used when there is a need
to point a specific things.
Example:
Whose bag is this?
This is his room.

Indefinite
Adjective
- indefinite adjectives are
used when the sentence has
nothing to point out or specify.
Example:
Many children like dinosaurs.
Is there any water in the bottle?

Interrogative
Adjective
- an interrogative adjective
modifies a noun or a noun
phrase and is similar to the
interrogative pronoun.

Example:
Which leaves turn color first?
Whose son is he?

Position of
Adjectives

1. Adjectives usually go before the


nouns they modify.
Ex. She is a nice girl.

2. When two or more adjectives come before a


noun, they are usually separated by commas.
Ex. A large, round table

3. Sometimes, we put an adjective after


the noun for the sake of emphasis.
Ex. There lived an old man strong and wicked.

4. In phrases, the adjective always comes


after the noun.
Ex. Time-immemorial, Heir-apparent, God Almighty,
etc.

5. In lines of poetry, too, the adjective is sometimes put


after the noun.

Ex. O men with sisters dear!

6. When the last two are adjectives


of color, they are usually
separated by and.
Ex. A black and white cow

7. When two or more adjectives


come in the predicative position,
we used and between the last two.
Ex. It was hot and sultry.
