INTRODUCTION
 Wi-Fi
 Wi-max
 Zigbee
BLUETOOTH……
 BLUETOOTH is most popular.
These are widely used to connect the large devices
like mobile phones or personal computers.
 Nokia introduced the new radio technology called
WIBREE.

2
What is WIBREE?

Naming of new technology:

 ’’wi’’ is the prefix for ’’wireless’’

 The ‘‘bree’’ comes from the old english word

for a cross road.

3
What is WIBREE?
 New radio technology for ultra low power applications

 Consumes only a fraction of the power compared to

other such radio technologies

 Enabling smaller and less costly implementations

 Easy to integrate with BLUETOOTH solutions.

4
What is WIBREE?

 Open industry initiative

First open technology offering connectivity between

mobile devices or personal computers, and small,
button cell battery power devices such as watches,
wireless keyboards, toys and sports & health care
sensors.

5
Why is WIBREE needed?

 Ultra low power cannot be achieved with existing open

standards

Currently available standardized local connectivity

technologies are not optimized for ultra low power
applications.

6
EVOLUTION
 WIBREE was launched to the market place as a new low
power ,low cost radio technology in oct 2006.
 In 2001 Nokia research centre looking at various user needs
and analysing what can be done with the available
connectivity technologies.
 They discovered that a low power wireless technology is
needed. Therefore Nokia began to develop a technology and
then branded as WIBREE to cover this gap.
 Many companies contributed their profiles and operability
specification.
 The technology will be available after the specifications are
finalised.
 The WIBREE merges with the BLUETOOTH .
7
WIBREE implementations:

There will be two types of WIBREE

implementations-

 WIBREE stand-alone chip

 WIBREE-BLUETOOTH dual-mode chip

8
WIBREE stand-alone chip:

characteristics
 extremely low power consumption
 small size
 low cost
 only small quantities of data are transferred.
applications
 heart-rate monitors
 watches
 sports and wellness devices
 human interface devices (HID) such as wireless keyboards.
9
WIBREE-BLUETOOTH dual-mode chip:

features
 Designed for use in BLUETOOTH devices.
 WIBREE functionality can be integrated with BLUETOOTH
for a minor incremental cost by utilizing key BLUETOOTH
components and the existing BLUETOOTH RF.
 Allows BLUETOOTH devices to connect to a new range of
tiny battery-powered devices.
applications
 Mobile phones and personal computers.

Physical layer specification

 passing bits to and from connecting medium .

 It has no under standing of the meaning of the bits .

 It deals with the electrical characteristics of the signals

14
Link layer specification

Low power idle mode advertisement service

Scan service
Connection set up service
Data exchange service
Traffic scheduling service

15
WIBREE host specification

 Specific host protocols have been selected in order to ensure

a minimal implementation of foot print in stand alone
implementation

 The design choice allows inexpensive addition of WIBREE

functionality to BLUETOOTH circuitry without compromising
the ability to design low peak power transceivers for WIBREE
stand alone devices

16
WIBREE profiles

Three profiles to optimize its functionality.

Watch profile
 HID[Human Interface Devices] profiles
Sensor profile

17
WIBREE Radio Specification

 The WIBREE radio specification allows BLUETOOTH-WIBREE

dual mode implementation to utilize the existing
BLUETOOTH RF and also enables ULP consumption in stand-
alone implementation.

The basic WIBREE specifications are

 bandwidth-2.4GHz
 Physical layer bit rate-1 Mbps
 Range-5-10 meters

18
WIBREE ULP operation

 Uses fewer channels [3 rather than 32].

 Duty cycle is 0.1% rather than 1%.

 If it’s service is not needed it goes to sleep mode.

 Comes back to active mode only when its service is needed.

 This helps for lower power consumption.

19
WIBREE and BLUETOOTH

 BLUETOOTH uses frequency hoping technology. WIBREE

uses advertising channel technology.

 BLUETOOTH is using for large file transfer and consumes

large power while WIBREE consumes low power and used
for small size file transfer.

 BLUETOOTH uses fixed packet length. WIBREE uses

variable packet length.

20
WIBREE and BLUETOOTH

 WIBREE is ultra low power technology

 In BLUETOOTH the total power consumption is much higher

(~2.5 mW).

 during transmission wibree consumes lessthan 15mA.

 In sleep mode it consumes about 900 nA.

21
WIBREE and Zigbee

 Zigbee uses mesh topology, while WIBREE uses star

topology

 Zigbee has got more range but WIBREE is more efficient.

 WIBREE can co-exist with BLUETOOTH,while Zigbee has no

relation ship with BLUETOOTH.

How do we make it happen?
 Fast availability of new technology

In order to ensure fast availability of the

new technology, Nokia is defining the WIBREE interoperability
specification together with a group of leading companies
representing semiconductor manufacturers, device vendors
and qualification service providers.

26
How do we make it happen?

 Open industry forum

The technology will be made broadly available to

the industry through an open and preferably existing forum
enabling wide adoption of the technology.

27
WIBREE security:

 WIBREE uses AES[Advanced Encryption Standard]

 It uses key size of 128 bit.

28
APPLICATIONS

29
1] Sports and Wellness:

Sports watches that connect to

sensors located on the body,
shoes and other fitness gear can
gather data on heart-rate,
distance, speed, acceleration
and send the information to a
mobile phone and/or Personal
Computer for storage and
further processing.

30
2] Healthcare:

Healthcare monitoring
equipment and sensors will
utilize WIBREE stand-alone
devices inorder to send vital
health-related information
(blood pressure, glucose level)
to BLUETOOTH-WIBREE dual-
mode devices (such as mobile
phones and/or personal
computers) which can store
and/or process this information
and send alerts to the mobile
phones of patients and
caretakers
31

SUMMARY:
As the First announcement about WIBREE was
only made in October 2006, and few details have been defined, it will take
some time for the work to be completed. WIBREE merges with the
BLUETOOTH and WIBREE becomes part of the BLUETOOTH specification as
an ultra low power BLUETOOTH technology. Yet despite this it is anticipated
that the first release of the specification will be available by the end of 2008
and devices late in the year. It will be interesting to see how WIBREE is
accepted by the market and whether it takes off in the way Nokia hopes.
