Rationale

Why not just management?

Why strategic management?

Description

The course will cover a wide range of strategic issues faced


by modern business organizations together with the theories,
techniques and tools used by managers to formulate,
implement and evaluate strategies designed to establish and
maintain competitive advantage.
Extensive use will be made of case studies of enterprises at
home and abroad both to enhance theoretical understanding
and to provide insights into the way in which techniques and
skills are used in practice.
Tutorials will provide with the opportunities to develop
analytical and practical skills.
The course will build on the knowledge gained in previous
subjects and will provide links with cognate areas such as
marketing, human resource management, and industrial
economics.

Objectives
The objectives of the course are to learn,
and to practice using, the principles for
formulating and implementing business
strategies.
Cases are used to provide actual
applications of the theoretical material.
After completing the course, the student
should be prepared to:
1) Perform a strategic analysis of a firm,

2) Recommend and evaluate alternatives to


address the outcome of the analysis, and
3) Develop a plan for implementing the chosen
alternative.
