LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course students are able to :

1. undertanding the basic concepts of
electromagnetic waves, their propagation and
generation
2. distinguish the effects of light interference,
diffraction, polarization and lasers
3. perform related assignment and presenting
reports within the prescribed duration.
4. practice working in groups and formulation as
well
PHY
4402 as explaining the assignment results.

COURSES SYNOPSIS

This course explains the insight of optics that involve

electromagnetic (EM) waves generation, superpositional
interactions and propagation. The beam undergoes
several phenomena that include interference, diffractions
and polarization from coherent and non-coherent
sources. The used of optics are beneficial for laser and
fiber optics applications. The advanced applications
include
optical
communications,
laser
material
processing, medical surgery, military and etc. A short
discussion on this topic will be initiated if time permits.

INFORMATION ON GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
For group assignment, students are divided into 10 Groups (Each
smaller group consists of 2 to 3 students).
Smaller groups will be assigned a topic covered in the lecture.
Many tutorials, one SCL will be presented later
A report (10 15 pages) must be submitted by the groups. (10 %)
