Photojournalism

CREATING GENERAL
AWARENESS IN SOCIETY

Photography
Photography is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving

pictures by recording radiation on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as a

photographic film, or an electronic sensor
Photography uses foremost radiation in the UV, visible and near-IR
spectrum. For common purposes the term light is used instead of radiation.
Light reflected or emitted from objects form a real image on a light sensitive
area (film or plate) or a FPA pixel array sensor by means of a pin hole or
lens in a device known as a camera during a timed exposure. The result on
film or plate is a latent image, subsequently developed into a visual image
(negative or dispositive).
An image on paper base is known as a print. The result on the FPA pixel
array sensor is an electrical charge at each pixel which is electronically
processed and stored in a computer (raster)-image file for subsequent
display or processing. Photography has many uses for business, science,
manufacturing (Photolithography), art, and recreational purposes.

Photojournalism
Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism

(the collecting, editing, and presenting of news

material for publication or broadcast) that creates
images in order to tell a news story.

It is now usually understood to refer only to still

images, but in some cases the term also refers to

video used in broadcast journalism.

Photojournalism depicts.
Child labor, child neglect, homelessness, poverty among

segments of society, impoverished children and the elderly,

working conditions in Brazilian gold mines, living in satellite
cities, farmers, hazardous industrial working conditions, etc.
The 'intentions' of the photographic authors range from
emphatic documentation to specific criticism of social
inequality
It shows a pure vision of something, like holding up a mirror
to society. It often tends to be ironic and can be distanced
from its subject matter, and often concentrates on a single
human moment, caught at a decisive or poignant moment.

Societal Benefits
The most significant benefit of photojournalism was its

ability to push for social change by illustrating the

problems associated with the society.
They are informative, and relevant to society, as well as
informing us of what is happening around the world.
These images also possess the quality of being
objective. The context of the images, and its relevance
are directly connected to the story it's telling.
It was the first medium to convey social issues to mass
audiences through the use of news magazines and
other publications.

Visual appeal
To most people who watch the news or read

newspapers, pictures are what give them a visual

representation of what the printed words are
summarizing.
This makes reading the newspaper more effective
because it gives the readers an idea of what it must be
like to witness these events as they are unfolding.
This is especially true of those who seldom watch the
news, or read the newspaper.
These images become their key to understanding the
stories that are being reported in the news.

Photo Essay
New technique linked to photojournalism: the photographic

essay. Since news magazines and other publications

finally had the capacity to include photographs, many of
them featured photographic essays.
A photo essay (or "photographic essay") is a set or series
of photographs that are intended to tell a story or evoke a
series of emotions in the viewer. A photo essay will often
show pictures in deep emotional stages. Photo essays
range from purely photographic works to photographs with
captions or small notes to full text essays with a few or
many accompanying photographs.
Photo essays can be sequential in nature, intended to be
viewed in a particular order, or they may consist of nonordered photographs which may be viewed all at once or

Conclusion
The emergence and development of photojournalism

has proved to be extremely beneficial in a number of

ways. Photojournalism was the first medium to depict
social problems throughout the world to mass
audiences. In fact, many peoples attitudes about
society changed through the widespread
commercialization of journalism.
Finally, photojournalism has utilized newer techniques
such as color and digital imaging in order to display
current technology and the benefits associated with
such technology. Photojournalism evidently shows how
the camera is an important means of illustrating life.
