APPLICATION OF PASSIVE

FIRE PROTECTION ON
STEEL STRUCTURES

FIREPROOFING AT A GLANCE

It is the act of making

materials or structures
more resistant to fire
It relates to measured
performance
under
specific
conditions
of
testing and evaluation
It holds a great deal of
importance to keep the
structural steel below
critical temperature

SURFACE PREPARATION
The first step in the process of fireproofing application
is Surface Preparation. It involves the cleaning of
the steel surface by appropriate means from :
Dirt
Oil
Grease
Loose mill scale
Rust
Other
materials that might impair bond that
accumulates between the time of fabrication and the
time of application of the fireproof coating

NUT WELDING
The second in the row is Nut Welding. All the
steel surface which is to be fireproofed shall be
welded with nuts. The placing of nuts shall be
done in a manner maintaining equal space
between the nuts from centre to centre in both
directions. Nut shall be welded to vessel
supports/skirts. This step is completed by
applying the primer paint to the welded nuts

MESH WINDING
The next step is Mesh
Winding. The mesh acts
as
an
additional
reinforcement
for
cementitious
fireproofing
material. It helps the
cementitious material stick
to the steel surface. The
mesh is tightened to the
nuts with the help of copper
of aluminium wire.

COATING WITH FIREPROOFING

MATERIAL
The next and the most
important
in
line
is
Coating
with
the
fireproofing material. The
prepared surface is coated
with
cementitious
fireproofing
material
having a uniform thickness
as per the specifications
and standards.

CURING
Then followed is Curing. It
helps the cementitious coating in
achieving
its
strength
and
decrease permeability. It is the
process in which the concrete is
protected from loss of moisture
and kept within a reasonable
temperature range. It is a key
player in mitigating cracks in the
concrete, which severely impacts
durability. Cracks allow open
access for harmful materials to
bypass the low permeability
concrete near the surface. Good
curing can help mitigate the
appearance
of
unplanned
cracking.

FINAL PAINTING
The last step is Final
Painting. It gives a
finishing touch to the
fireproofed surface. It
provides
safety
from
weathering and fills the
voids. It is done in two
coats namely first and
second. It also follows the
specifications
and
standards.
