When a beginning learner
thinks, he uses the language
that he grew up with.

Benefits of MTBMLE

Reduced drop-out
Reduced repetition
Children are attending school
Children are learning
Parents and community are involved

If the mother tongue is not used

Loss of
confidence of
students in
themselves as
learners.
Inability to learn
the official school
language well.
High repetition
and drop-out

If the mother tongue is not used

Alienation from heritage

language and culture, from
parents and community.
Loss of languages, cultures
and of knowledge systems.

We should
become trilingual as a
country. Learn
English well and
connect to the
World.
Learn Filipino
well and connect
to our country.
Retain your
dialect and
connect to your
heritage."

The value of languages and intercultural

skills in business
For the 2011 Global Graduates into Global Leaders
report (cihe.co.uk/globalgraduates-into-global-leaders),
leading employers were asked to rank a list of global
competencies by order of importance. The results
showed that the most important global competency for
graduates is the ability to work collaboratively with
teams of people from a range of backgrounds and
countries.
Understanding foreign languages and having intercultural
skills are crucial factors in achieving this competency.
If you can communicate your ideas to team members of
different nationalities, you are, in effect, the bridge
between their languages and cultures.
