Female

Reproductive
System

The pH of the vagina is quite

acidic, averaging around 4.5 on
the pH scale (7 is neutral).
That's about as acidic as beer
or tomatoes.

Produces ova (the female

reproductive cell)
Provides a location for
fertilization and growth of a baby
Secretes female sex hormones
(Estrogen and Progesterone)
The breast produce milk to
nourish the newborn.

Whats involved?
This system consists
of both internal and
external genitalia or
reproductive organs.
The internal
genitalia are located
in the pelvic cavity
Breasts

The internal
genitalia consists of
:
the uterus
Two ovaries
Two fallopian tubes
The vagina (extends
to the external
surface of the body)

Uterus

Small

almond-shaped glands that

produce ova and the female sex
hormones located on both sides of
the uterus within the pelvic cavity.
In charge of ovulation and producing
the female sex hormones. The
hormones are responsible for getting
the lining of the uterus prepared for a
fertilized ovum.

Also known as female gonads

They produce eggs (also called ova)
every female is born with a lifetime
supply of eggs
They also produce hormones:
Estrogen&Progesterone

Also

called the uterine tubes or

oviducts
measure about 8 to 13 cm in
length.
Propels the ovum from the ovary to
the uterus so that it can implant
Where Fertilization takes place
normally

The

lower portion or neck of the

uterus.
The cervix acts as the passage
through which the baby exits the
uterus into the vagina.
The cervical canal expands to
roughly 50 times its normal width
for the passage of the baby
during birth

The

cervix is lined with mucus,

known as cervicalmucus
Cervical

mucus provides
lubrication & sperm transport
during sexual intercourse
During ovulation secretion of
cervical mucus increases in
response to estrogen
But when an egg is ready for
fertilization, the mucus then
becomes thin and slippery,
offering a friendly environment
to sperm

Hollow

pear-shaped organ that

contains a thick muscular wall, a
mucous membrane lining,
ENDOMETRIUM and a rich supply
of blood.
Houses the fetus and contractions
to the walls propels the baby
during delivery through the birth
canal in a normal delivery

During

pregnancy, the blood

vessels in the endometrium
further increase in size and
number, forming the placenta,

Placenta

supplies oxygen and

nutrition to the embryo & fetus

A muscular

tube, lined with mucous

membrane that extends from the
cervix of the uterus to the outside of
the body.
During intercourse, the vagina
receives the males penis and
semen.
Serves as a birth canal that the baby
passes through in a normal delivery.

Produces milk to nourish a newborn

Size doesnt enable ability to
breastfeed
Milk is produced by the lactiferous
glands and carried out to the nipple
by the lactiferous ducts.
The AREOLA is the pigmented
area around the nipple.
