After Independence in 1968, the illiteracy rate in
Mauritius was very high.

It has enabled societies to prosper both socially


and economically.

realize your potential and qualities as a human being. It helps
you to tap into latent talent, so that you may be able to
sharpen your skills.

Purpose of Education in The Economy

A country's economy becomes more productive as


the proportion of educated workers increases,
since educated workers are able to more efficiently
carry out tasks that require literacy and critical
thinking.

Positive Aspects of education System


Free education.
Education has been free for the secondary level since 1977 and for full time undergraduate level at the
University of Mauritius since 1988.

Great way to develop social skills.


For example a child is able to develop reasoning in social relations, cultivates social virtues and thus becomes
socially efficient.

Therefore interaction with others lead to peace and harmony in a multi-cultural societies.

Technology into the teaching process.


This enable the child to get use to modern technology as we are living in a fast modern era of technology.

Mauritian education system is internationally recognized.


We adopt the British system of education. Our school and higher school certificates come from Cambridge,
worldwide known university

Training Opportunities in tertiary


For example UOM and UTM offer training opportunities for their students. Therefore this training enables the
student to come out their academic shell.

Drawbacks of the Mauritian Education System


Too much emphasis is put on the academic performance of
the students rather than on their overall development.
Exam Centered
The ultimate aim is only to pass the exams.
Often achieved through cramming.

Too competitive
Causes indiscipline behavior among students.
Students undergo a lot of stress.
