It is the style ofles Fauves(Frenchfor

group of early twentieth-centuryModern

Uses wild brush work and strident colors,


while their subject matter had a high
degree of simplification andabstraction

NEO-IMPRESSIONISM

Neo-impressionismwas coined by
French art criticFlix Fnonin 1886 to
describe anart movementfounded
byGeorges Seurat.

Followers of neo-impressionism, in
particular, were drawn to modern urban
scenes as well as landscapes and
seashores.

Science-based interpretation of lines and


colors influenced neo-impressionists
characterization of their
owncontemporary art.

HENRI MATISSE

Henri-mile-Benot Matisse wasborn on


December 31 1869 November 3 1954 in
Nord, France, the oldest son of a prosperous
grain merchant

He was a French artist, known for his use of


color and his fluid and original draughtsman
ship.

His mastery of the expressive language of


color and drawing, displayed in a body of
work spanning over a half-century, won him
recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Andr Derain(10 June 1880 8 September


1954) was a French artist, painter, sculptor
and co-founder ofFauvismwithHenri
Matisse.

The vivid, unnatural colors led the criticLouis


Vauxcelles to derisively dub their works
asles Fauves, or "the wild beasts", marking
the start of theFauvistmovement.

With bold colors and compositions, Derain


painted multiple pictures of
theThamesandTower Bridge.

Georges Pierre Seuratwas born on


December 2 1859March 29 1891 and
aFrenchPostImpressionistpainteranddraftsman.

He is noted for his innovative use of drawing


media and for devising a technique of
painting known as pointillism.

His large-scale workA Sunday Afternoon on


the Island of La Grande Jatte (18841886)
altered the direction ofmodern artby
initiatingNeo-impressionism.

PAUL SIGNAC

Paul Signac (11 November 1863 15 August


1935) was aFrenchneo-impressionist
painterwho, working withGeorges Seurat, helped
develop thepointillist style.

Under his (Seurat) influence he abandoned the


short brushstrokes of impressionismto
experiment with scientifically juxtaposed small
dots of pure color, intended to combine and blend
not on the canvas but in the viewer's eye, the
defining feature of pointillism.

Many of Signac's paintings are of the French


coast.
