OBJECTIVE
Know the meaning of Natural Disaster.
Know the causes and effect of Natural Disaster.
Know how Natural Disaster occur.
How to Prevent the effect on enviroment and
effect on human.

WHAT ARE THE NATURAL

DISASTER
Natural disaster is an event

with a natural, as opposed to

human, cause that result in
large-scale loss of life or
damage to property.
It can be related to weather,
geology,biology or even
factors outside the Earth.
In some case, natural and
human factors may combine to
produce a disaster.

HOW NATURAL DISASTER

OCCUR
Movements of Earth:
Occur with minimum amount of warning.
It difficult to predict and impossible to stop.
Action that can be done is to take appropriate action
to limit damage and loss of life after they occur.

HOW NATURAL
DISASTER OCCUR

Weather :

Will usually be some degree of advanced warning, but since weather

is unpredictable, nothing can be done to stop these disasters from

developing once the weather system develops.

HOW NATURAL
DISASTER OCCUR

Extreme Weather :
Like floods, mudslides, landslides and famine.
Events or are supplementry to other
natural disasters.
Often they are the result of extreme and unforeseen
conditions.

TYPES OF
NATURAL
DISASTER

RING OF FIRE
Some 80 % of all the planet's
earthquakes occur along the
rim of the Pacific Ocean, called
the "Ring of Fire" because of
the preponderance of volcanic
activity there as well.
* preponderance (greater of
number)

What is the
meaning ?
How does it form ?

EARTHQUAKE

MEANING

A sudden movement of the

earth's crust caused by the
release of stress accumulated
along geologic faults or by
volcanic activity. Also called
seism, temblor.

Scientists assign a magnitude rating

to earthquakes based on the
strength and duration of their
seismic waves.

HOW DOES IT

FORM?

HOW DOES
EARTHQUAKE
RELATED TO
TSUNAMI?

TSUNAMI

TSUNAMI

a very high, large wave in

the ocean that is usually
caused by an earthquake
under the sea and that
can cause great
destruction when it
reaches land

VOLCANO

WHAT IS THE
MEANING???
A mountain or hill, typically conical,
having a crater or vent through which
lava, rock fragments, hot vapour, and
gas are or have been erupted from the
earths crust.

HOW DOES IT FORM?

Volcanoes are formed when magma
from within the Earth's upper
mantle works its way to the surface.
At the surface, it erupts to form lava
flows and ash deposits. Over time
as the volcano continues to erupt, it
will get bigger and bigger.

Pros
Cons

Improve soil fertility

Produce geothermal energy
Attract millions of visitors

Destroy crops, habitat & cities

Produce gases that aid global
warning
Can lead to earthquakes &
tsunamis

DROUGHT

DROUGHT
A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a
shortage of water:

FLOOD

FLOOD
An overflow of a large amount of
water beyond its normal limits,
especially over what is normally
dry land

WHAT CAUSES FLOODS?

A flood is caused by a
combination of heavy
rainfall causing river /
oceans to over flow their
banks, and can happen at
any time of the year, not
just in the winter.
