ARE OBTAINED

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Understand and learn how to configure static

IP address.
Understand and learn how to configure
dynamic IP address.

INDUCTION SET

How IP address are configure into your

computer?

Set Induction answer.

IP addresses can be assigned into your
computer either statically or dynamically.

HOW IP ADDRESSES ARE OBTAINED :

STATIC AND DYNAMIC ADDRESS ASSIGNMENT
Static
Manually configure the network information
for a host.
Its includes the host IP address, subnet mask
and default gateway.
Useful for printers, servers and other
networking devices that need to be accessible
to clients on the network.
What is the problem if we use static IP
configuration to the large networks?
(burden on staff, waste of time, entry errors)

DYNAMIC
IP

addresses assigned automatically and it is done using a

protocol known as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
(DHCP).

DHCP

automatic assignment of addressing information such

as IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and other
configuration information.

DHCP advantages :
DHCP is generally the preferred method of assigning IP
addresses to hosts on large networks since it reduces the
burden on network support staff and virtually eliminates
entry errors.
Another benefit of DHCP is that an address is not
permanently assigned to a host but is only leased for a
period of time. If the host is powered down or taken off
the network, the address is returned to the pool for reuse.

DHCP server is configured with a range, or pool, of IP addresses that can be

assigned to DHCP clients.
A client that needs an IP address will send a DHCP Discover message which is a
broadcast with a destination IP address of 255.255.255.255 and a destination MAC
address of FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF.
All hosts on the network will receive this broadcast DHCP frame, but only a DHCP
server will reply.
The server will respond with a DHCP Offer, suggesting an IP address for the client.
The host then sends a DHCP Request to that server asking to use the suggested
IP address.
The server responds with a DHCP Acknowledgment.

SUMMARY

Understand how IP address are obtained :

static and dynamic.
Static are manually configured and it useful for
device that are been access by user on the
network. (Printer and Server).
Dynamic use DHCP server to automatic assign
IP address to hosts on the large networks.
Learn how to configure static and dynamic IP
using Packet Tracer.

LAB ACTIVITY 2 ASSIGN STATIC IP

By using packet tracer:

a)
b)
c)

Connect 2 computer to one Switch(2960).

Assign static private IP address using Class
A to all the computer.
Test the connectivity between the
computer

LAB ACTIVITY 2
ASSIGN DYNAMIC IP

Download packet tracer activity from Cisco

Discovery 1 (5.3.3).
