ATTITUDES
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

Leon Festinger 1950s

It refers to any Incompatibility that an

Individual might Perceive
- between two or more Attitudes or
- between Attitude and Behavior

Such an Incompatibility/ Inconsistency is

Uncomfortable and thus the Individuals will
attempt to Reduce the Dissonance.
ATTITUDES
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
The greater the dissonance the greater
the Pressure to Reduce it- after it has
been Moderated by the Factors;
Importance, Choice, and Reward
The Above factors suggest Individuals will not
directly move towards Reducing dissonance
Thus Desire to Reduce Dissonance
is Determined by :
Importance, Choice, and Reward
ATTITUDES
1. The Importance of Elements
creating the dissonance;

If the Elements creating Dissonance

are
relatively Unimportant, the
Pressure to
Correct this imbalance will be Low.
ATTITUDES
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
2. The Degree of Influence an
Individual believes she/he has over
the Elements

If the Dissonance producing behavior is

required as a result of the boss’s order,
the pressure to Reduce dissonance
would be less than
If the behavior was performed
Voluntarily…..
ATTITUDES
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

which individuals are Motivated
to Reduce Dissonance.
