Calculation Emissions Exercise

Introduction

A well-organized freight transport system is essential for

economic development and it offers a wide range of
benefits such as accessibility to goods and services.
However, it is obvious that it also causes serious
problems in form of negative impacts on environment
and human health.
Motor vehicles emit a large amount of pollutants and
freight transport sector is a significant contributor to air
pollution at local as well as regional and global levels.
In addition, transport is a major source of noise, and
gives rise to other environmental problems, such as
water pollution and fragmentation of land.

Introduction

This is the reason because the transport and

logistics industry has a responsibility to constantly
improve its environmental performance. The
challenge is to find ways of reducing
environmental impact, while allowing industry
growth in line with the demands of the community
(as freight transport supports the quality of life
desired by a community).
The goal is looking into ways of achieving a
balance between industry growth and
environmental impact.

Objectives

The main objective of this presentation is to

realize and understand environmental impact
arising from freight transport.
Raise awareness of the importance of reducing
environmental impact through green supply
chain processes

Methodology

For our study, and with the help of (www.ecotransit.org) we

have calculated the Emissions for the haulage between the
two major cities of Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki, using
different transportation alternatives.
They are located at a distance of about 500 km, to measure
the environmental impact we will use two different units of
measurement of efficiency:
o Well to Tank, which is the extraction efficiency from fuel
to the reservoir.
o Tank To Wheel. Efficiency from the fuel tank to the tire.

Analysis
1st scenario (Road transport)

Analysis
2nd scenario (Rail transport)

Analysis
3rd scenario (Maritime transport)

Conclusion

As we can see, the most enviromental friendly means of

transport is the train for because it produces less
emissions , has primary energy consumption of 24 603
megajoules and carbon dioxide emission of 1.53 tonnes.
In conclusion we can summarize by saying that the train
is an environmentally friendly way mode of transport
because of its energy efficiency and low carbon dioxide
emissions. In particular electrical trains are the most
energy efficient mode of transport because their energy
consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are
approximately five time smaller than the cars.
