The Liquid Limit apparatus is used for determining
the liquid limit of soils in a mechanical method in
the laboratory. The liquid limit data of soils is useful
to correlate mechanical properties of soils, such as
compressibility and lower shear strength.
Liquid limit is the water content at

which soil passes from zero strength to an
infinitesimal strength, hence the liquid limit cannot
be determined. For liquid limit determination
purpose liquid limit is that water content at which a
part of soil, cut by a groove of standard dimensions
will flow together for a distance of 1.25 cm under an
impact of 25 blows in a standard liquid limit
apparatus. The soil at the water content has some
strength of 0.17 N/cm2 (17.6 gm/cm2). At this water
content, soil just passes from liquid state to plastic
state.

EVAPORATION DISH : It is bowl type porcelain dish used
for preparing test sample of soil.
SPATULA : Used for mixing the soil sample and water. It is
made of steel blade of required dimensions provided with a

LAB VANE SHEAR TEST APPARATUS

The Vane shear apparatus is widely used for finding the shear
strength of a given soil specimen. The measurement of shear
strength of cohesive soils can be easily done. This is useful for soils
of low shear strength (less than 0.3 kg/cm2) for which tri-axial or
unconfined tests cannot be performed. The test gives the undrained
strength of the soil. The undisturbed and remolded strength obtained
are useful for evaluating the sensitivity of soil.
The Load Frame consists of a cabinet which houses the gear system
and motor with sturdy angle iron frame
The loading is done through the bottom loading platen, which is
carried on a lead screw, which advances upwards. The top load
bracket, which slides over two upright pillars, can be positioned at
any desired height and locked. It carries a screw adapter for
standard proving rings

UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TEST

The unconfined compression test of soil is a uni-axial
compression test in which the test specimen is provided with no
lateral support while undergoing vertical compression. The test
measures the unconfined compression strength of a cylinder of
cohesive or semi cohesive soil and indirectly shearing strength.
The shearing strength of the soil is generally taken to be one
half of the unconfined compression strength. The test is
normally performed on a undisturbed sample with its natural
moisture content. It may also be performed on remolded
samples to evaluate the consequences of disturbances and
remolding.
Unconfined Compression Test Apparatus is normally useful in
soil mechanics laboratories. The unconfined compression test is
the simplest and quickest method for evaluation of the shear
strength of cohesive soil in the laboratory or in the field. The
results of the test are widely used in ascertaining the relative

The apparatus is used to determine the direct shear strength of soils on
specimen size 60 mm x 60 mm x 25 mm.
The apparatus comprises of the following:
Loading Unit: Supplied with load yoke with direct and lever system for
applying load. Normal stress capacity 8 kg/sq.cm. Load is applied either
directly or through a counter balanced detachable lever. Provision is

RAPID MOISTURE METER

For quick determination of moisture content of

materials in powder form viz. soil, sand, coal,
pottery slip, cement etc. Calcium Carbide when
comes in contact with moisture acetylene gas in
generate. This principle is used in Rapid Moisture
Meter. A weighted quantity of sample is mixed with
fixed quantity of Calcium Carbide reagent and the
whole mixture is thoroughly shaken in a vessel to
which a pressure gauge is fixed. The acetylene gas
produced develops pressure and pressure gauge is
calibrated to read percentage moisture. The
instrument indicates moisture on wet/weight BLS
easily convertible to dry weight basis.
The unit consists of a pressure vessel with clamp

STANDERD PENETRATION TEST APPARATUS

The Standard Penetration Tests aims to determine the

SPT N value, which gives an indication of the soil
stiffness and can be empirically related to many
engineering properties.
The test is conducted inside a borehole. A 'split spoon'
sampler is attached to the bottom of a core barrel and
lowered into position at the bottom of the borehole.
The sampler is driven into the ground by a drop
hammer weighing 65 kg falling through a height of 75
cm. The number of hammer blows is counted. The
number required to drive the sampler three successive
150mm increments is recorded. The first increment (0150mm) is not included in the N value as it is assumed
that the top of the test area has been disturbed by the
drilling process. The SPT N is the number of blows
required to achieve penetration from 150-450mm.
The hammer weight, drop height, spoon diameter, rope
diameter etc. are standard dimensions.
After the test, the sample remaining inside the split
spoon is preserved in an airtight container for
inspection and description.

It is used to determine the maximum practicallyachievable density of soil and aggregates, and are
frequently used in geotechnical Engineering.
The test consists of compacting the soil or aggregate
to be tested into a standard mould using a
standardized compactive energy at several different
levels of moisture content. The maximum dry density
and optimum moisture content is determined from the
results of the test. Soil in place is tested for in-place
dry bulk density, and the result is divided by the

This apparatus is used for estimating the bearing capacity of
shallow foundations in situ and for the design of flexible
pavement. In the test procedure a steel plate is subjected to
gradually increasing load and settlements of the plates

In flexible pavement construction, bitumen binders are used. It is important that bituminous material
forms ductile thin film around the aggregates, Which serves as a binder. The binder material not of
sufficient ductility renderspervious pavement surface and leads to development of cracks. Therefore
it is important to carry out the ductility tests on bituminous material. Ductility is defined as distance in
cms to which a standard briquette of bitumen can be stretched before the thread breaks. The
briquette is stretched at a rate of 50mm/minute 25mm per minute at a temperature of 27C 0.5C.
Salient Features
The apparatus consists of a water bath with a thermostatic heater, and a circulating pump to maintain
uniform water temperature. One half of the briquette moulds is fixed on a fixed plate in the water
bath, the other half of the briquette mould is fixed to a carrier which slides over a rotating threaded
shaft with a clutch. The motor and gears to rotate the shaft are housed in a cabinet fixed above the
other end of the bath. A pointer fixed to the carrier moves over a scale graduated from 0-110 cm x
1mm fixed on the bath with 0 (zero) of the scale towards the fixed plate side. The rotating shaft has
2 speeds of travel for the bracket, 5cm/min and 1 cm/min., selected by a clutch. Water bath inside is
aluminium, it is an insulated water bath. Water bath is provided with a drain. A heater with
thermostatic control is fixed inside the water bath. Control switches for motor, stirrer, heater and
indicator lamps are fixed at a convenient place on the water bath, complete with three briquette
moulds and one base plate, all made of brass. Operates on 230 volts A.C. single phase.

TILE ABRASION TESTING MACHINE

MS Structure and powder coated paint.
Tile abrasion tester is used for determination of
resistance to wear for cement concrete flooring tiles.
Tiles specimen of size 7.06 cm x 7.06 cm is pressed
face-wise under specific load on a grinding path and
abrasive powder 9Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3): is
evenly spread on the rotating grinding path and after
specific number of revolutions of the grinding disc
the second parallel side of the tile is subjected to
wear for similar number of rotations. The wear of the
tile is measured on a thickness gauge specifically
made for the purpose.
Technical Specification:
The machine consists of a disc rotating at a speed of 30 rpm in a circular tray.
A bracket is provided to hold the specimen.
A counter balance lever loads the specimen. Load applied is 30 kgf.
A funnel is fitted to evenly spread abrasive powder on the grinding path.
A pre-set counter automatically stops the machine after 22 revolutions. This counter
is re-adjustable. The machine works on 440volts AC, three phase electrical supply.

Point Load Index Test Apparatus

Vibration machine is used for the preparation of mortar cubes for the determination

MSI- 605 Rock Classification Hammer (Rebound

The concrete/ Rock test hammer is an instrument which is easy to
use, for quick and approximate measurement of the resistance to
pressure of manufactured concrete products. The principles on
which it works are based on the rebound impact of a hammer on
a piston which rests against the surface of the concrete products.
The Greater the resistance of the concrete, greater is the
rebounded impact.
Specifications: Consists of a barrel in which is housed a hammer
mass attached to an impact spring which slides on a guide bar. A
plunger is attached to the guide bar which is pressed against the
surface to be tested. As the piston is pressed against the surface
to be tested, on reaching the compressive strength, the hammer
mass is released and rebounds to a certain extent (according to
the strength of the surface)which is indicated by a rider on a
calibrated scale. A lock button fixed on the body of the hammer
locks the rider in place and the rider can be record to zero
position by using the same button. The equivalent compressive
strength can be computed from the chart supplied. Each hammer
is calibrated against a standard test hammer; and is suitable for
specimen of compressive strengths 10-70 N/mm 2 The instrument,
complete with a grinding stone for polishing the test surface, is
supplied in carrying case.
