Pit Access Procedure (Typical)

Call or ride the car to the lowest floor where pit access is available.
Install a suitable barricade at the door to be accessed and/or inside the car if required.
Place 2 car calls to higher floors preferably one to the floor directly above and another at a higher floor.
As the car is leaving the floor, stop the car in a position that will allow access to the pit by opening the
hoistway door with the door unlocking device. Block the doors mechanically in the open position.
Wait with the landing door open (10 seconds recommended) to verify the car does not move when the
landing door is unlocked.
Place the pit Emergency Stop Switch to the Stop position.
Remove the mechanical door blocking and allow the door to close and lock.
Wait (10 seconds) with the landing door closed.
Re-open the door and ensure the car has not moved. Mechanically block the door.
Turn On the pit lighting.
SPECIAL NOTE

When working at the lower level of the pit is required and the pit Emergency Stop Switch is not
within reach from that level a second Emergency Stop Switch should be installed and accessible
from that level.

On some occasions elevators utilize multi-level pits. When this occurs an accessible pit
Emergency Stop Switch must be installed at each level.

It is imperative that the mechanic has access to an Emergency Stop Switch where work activities
are required to be carried out.
