Introduction on landfill
Parameters in landfill site selection
Methodology : AHP
Utilizing of GIS
Conclusion

INTRODUCTION ON LANDFILL
Most used in waste disposal other than
incinerator and composting
Cheaper and convenient
Often misunderstood with open and
burning dumps
Life cycle of landfill:

INTRODUCTION ON LANDFILL
Total solid waste produced on 2005 is
19,100 tons per day and increased to
21,100 tons per day on 2010
Escalation will cause a problem to the solid
waste management because more places
are needed to dump and dispose the waste
NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) and NIABY (Not
in Anyones Backyard) campaign has
become a challenge to the decision makers
and planner to open new landfill site.

INTRODUCTION ON LANDFILL
The insufficient amount of landfill will
cause many problems:
improper waste management, leachate
leaking, and bad scenic view to the
community

Many criteria and parameters need

to be consider:
social, physical, economic, political,
technical parameters and environmental
aspects

INTRODUCTION ON LANDFILL
Evaluation used in assessment and evaluation
method for suitable landfill are [5]:
Ad-hoc hethod: compare alternatives without using any
method to order preferences
Checklist method: compare alternatives with no
compensatory rules
Economic method: use economic procedure to translate
into monetary unit
Cartographic method: compare alternatives using maps
Pair wise comparison method: use sequential
comparison alternatives in pairs as basis for ordering
preferences
Matrix method : use matrix for summary, compare and
evaluate of criteria and alternatives

LANDFILL SITE SELECTION

APPROACH
Landfill site selection can be divided
into four main phases:
The first stage is identification of
potential sites through preliminary
screening based on constraints
(exclusionary criteria)
In second phase, candidate sites are
evaluated based on attributes, ranked,
and appropriate sites are selected and
identified.

The third phase is the

evaluation of their
suitability based on
environmental impact
assessment,
economic feasibility,
engineering design,
and cost comparison
In the final phase, the
best site is selected.

Selection of Landfill Using

GIS
Give significant help to solve this matter

because of its potential in handling large

volume of spatial data that needs to be
evaluates and processed
GIS for locating landfill site is economical
and practical as they have :
i) capabilities to manage and analyze the volumes
of diverse multidisciplinary data needed in
application;
ii) functionality to perform what if scenarios which
can be used either to evaluate the effects of
different planning policies and to select those most
suitable, and
iii) ability to be used for modelling impacts of

Research Methodology

Methodology
In stage 1, this research is planned and the
information needed is gathered
In stage 2, the data needed had been
collected from Department of Survey and
Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM), Iskandar
Regional Development Authority (IRDA),
Department of Rural and Urban Planning,
Municipal Cities, Department of Mineral and
Geoscience Malaysia and Centre for
Geographical Information & Analysis (CGIA).

Methodology
In stage 3, the Euclidean distance analysis
conducted to measures the straight line as it
can expressed as physical distance in GIS
project. Reclassification analysis are done to
assign numeric values to classes with each
map layer to ensure they have equal
importance in determine the most suitable
location for landfill.
In stage 4, sensitivity analysis is a process of
ascertaining use of evaluating how sensitive
the spatial multicriteria model output
depends upon small changes in input values
Lastly, the user interface will be developed so

CONCLUSION
Having proper data handling, the
research can be more accurate and
efficient
Helps the developer and planner to
determined the next suitable landfill
site
