TOEIC Description
10-20 Photographs
Places, Objects, People, and Animals
A speaker reads 4 possible statements describing
each photograph
The speaker reads the statements only once, you
cannot go back and hear the audio again

What CAN you see

in the Picture??
NOT WHAT YOU
ASSUME!!!
Who?
What?
Where?
Why?

Look at the Photographs

ASK: Who? What? Where? and Why?

A) They are watching a

movie.
B) They are eating
together.
C) The people are
speaking to each other.
D) The people are on their
phones.

Prepositions

ds that connect/link nouns, pronouns, verb or phrases to other words in a sente

hrase. Eg: For, of, on, in, at, to, with, off, without, under, over, about, etc.

A) The people are on the

bus.
B) The people are with a
bus.
C) The people are under
the bus.
D) The people are over
the bus.

Question Response
Directions: You will hear a question or statement
followed by three responses. Choose the best
response to each question or statement and
circle (A), (B), or (C).
The questions/statements are not written in the
test book, so you have to listen carefully!
The questions/statements are only read once
If you dont understand a question or statement,
it is best to guess! Never leave them blank or
unanswered

Information Questions
Remember the W-H Questions: WHAT WHY WHO/WHOM WHOSE WHICH - WHERE - WHEN - HOW
They are NEVER answered YES/NO.
Eg: Where are you from?
A) Yes, my name is James.
B) Hes from England.
C) Im from Mexico.

Information Questions
Who questions require a person in the answer
What questions require some type of information in the
answer
Where questions require a place or position in the answer
Why questions require a reason in the answer (because.)
When questions require a time reference in the answer

Yes or no Questions
When questions DO NOT start with a W-H they usually
expect a YES/NO, RIGHT/WRONG, or TRUE/FALSE answer.
Eg: Can you speak Italian?
A) She talks all the time.
B) Yes, I can.
C) No, I dont like Spaghetti.

Usually begin with: can, have you, do/does,

is/are, would you like

Similar-Sounding Words
Sometimes, test writers confuse students with words
that sound similar in the question and in the answer.
Example:
1) Have you ever played poker?
a) The play begins at 9:00
b) No, its the first time.
2) Where did you go shopping?
b) I often wear this dress.
b) I went to the supermarket.
3) Do you want me to type this report?
a) Its the same type.
b) No, thanks. Ill do it by myself.

Why did he wash your car?

(A) He watched it last Saturday.
(B) I left my watch in your car.
(C) Because it was dirty.

Its an information question with why so we know the

question is asking for the reason he washed the car.
Be careful with similar-sounding words: wash, watched and
watch.

Did you walk to the station this morning?

(A) I work at the station.
(B) I woke up at six this morning.
(C) No, I took the bus.

Its a yes or no question so we know the answer will probably

be yes/no, right/wrong or true/false .
Be careful with similar-sounding words: walk, work and
woke up.

SHORT
CONVERSATIONS &
TALKS
TOEIC Practice

Description of this part

In Part 3 you will hear several short talks
or conversations.
In the test booklet you will see a question
and 4 possible answers. You must choose
the best answer.

Here are some strategies to help

you choose the correct answer...

Read the question first

The best time-saving strategy is to try to
read the questions before you hear the
conversation/talk. This will help you to:
1) Get a general idea of the topic
2) Identify the type of information you
should be listening for.

Listen to the entire

conversation
It is important to listen to the whole
conversation before choosing your
answer
There may be important details in the
first part or the very end of the
conversation

Try to picture the scene.

WHAT?

WHO?

- What is the context? - Men/women?

- Whats the speaker - Occupation status?
- Relationship
doing?
between the 2
speakers?
- General
atmosphere?
- Tone of the voices?

WHERE?
- In the street,
building?
- In a car, in public
transport?

Repeated words
Be careful of words that are
repeated in the answers; this does
not mean it is the correct answer!

Now we will do 2 examples...

What is Jeffs problem?

(A) His car does not work.
(B) He must go to the shopping mall.
(C) He broke his leg.
(D)He cannot drive.
(Woman)
(Man)
(Woman)

Jeff, can you take me to the shopping mall?

Im sorry but I cant. My car broke down
yesterday.
Thats OK. Ill take the bus.

Try to picture the scene: Jeff cant take the woman

to the shopping mall because his car broke down
(stopped working, has a problem) yesterday. She
is going to take the bus.
Be careful of repeated words: broke down and
broke his leg these mean completely different
things!

What are they probably talking about?

(A) Yesterdays meeting.
(B) A book.
(C) The womans back pain
(D)A train schedule.
(Woman)

Could I have it back when youve finished

reading it?
(Man)
Yes, sure. Sorry I forgot I still had it.
(Woman) Its all right. Theres no rush. Its just that I met
Jerry
on the train yesterday and I promised to
lend it to
him.

Be careful of repeated words: The woman says the

word train but she is not talking about a train
schedule.
You must listen carefully: at the beginning of the
conversation the woman says ...when youve
finished reading it? So she must be talking about
something you can read.

INCOMPLETE SENTENCES AND READING
COMPREHENSION

Incomplete Sentences:
Description
30

questions,
recording.

they

are

not

in

the

word or phrase is missing.

You

have to choose between 4 possible

answers.

You

have to demonstrate your knowledge

of
English
grammar,
usage,
and
vocabulary.

Determine the type of question

Read

the whole sentence once to get a general

idea of the type of sentence.

If you are given the choice between words or

phrases that have different meanings, its a
question of vocabulary.

If you are given the choice between different

forms of the same word, its a question of
grammar.

Examples
Are

there any tickets

show?

for tonights

A) lift
B) left
C) lived
D) let
This

is a question of vocabulary. The four

options all have different meanings.

Examples

This

is a question of grammar. The four

play.

Strategies
Answer

the easier questions first, then go back

to the more difficult ones

Eliminate

any answers that are the wrong part

of speech
Read

the sentence with the remaining options

and choose the one that sounds the best

Dont

waste too much time on one question

after 30 seconds just guess!

will help you to get an idea of the type

of information you are looking for

Read

any titles or headings to get a general

idea of the document

Consider
Is

the format of the text

it an advertisement? A notification? An
email?

Strategies
Do

NOT stop reading to try to understand

words that you do not know. If you don't know
a word skip it. You do not need to know all the
words to get the general idea of the text.

Do

the easier questions firstdont miss easy

points!

You

may see a response that has the same

word that the passage has. This does not
necessarily mean it is the correct answer!

Strategies: Inferences
The

information needed to answer a

question is not always said directly
in the text. Sometimes you have to
infer what the correct answer is
based on information in the text.

Most importantly.
Time

management is critical!
Dont spend too much time on
difficult questionsjust guess
and move on
