UNIT 1 PERSONAL LETTERS

WRITING: WRITING PERSONAL LETTERS


It should be fun
You write it because of your own desires
It is like a conversation, you write what you want to say to
your friend
Write what you feel
Dont worry too much about style, grammar, or even
punctuation or spelling- as long as the letters intelligible
It is not a writing examination, so have fun with it
Model for personal letter : see page 2.2

GRAMMAR : PRESENT TENSE (AGREEMENT)

a.Defining Subject-Verb Agreement


Subject and verbs in present tense must agree in number, singular subject
=> verbs with singular endings, and same with plural subject.
He, she and it use an s or es ending on the verb.
b.Special Singular Constructions
Either (of) || neither (of) || each (of) || one (of) || every one(of)
c.Separation of Subject and Verb
A phrase or clause separates the subject from the verbs. Look for the
subject, then make sure that the verb agrees with the subject.
d.Agreement in Questions
The subject usually follows the verb.
Example : What is the secret of your success? => the subject secret takes
the singular verb is.

UNIT 2 COMMUNAL LETTERS

WRITING : WRITING COMMUNAL LETTERS


Normally sent by a person or family to a group of friends or realtives
Communal letters are personal letters
Usually describe news or recent events, but not contain private or
sensitive information
Only sent to close friend or family
The purpose of it is not just spreading news, but help create a sense
of belonging and community that is difficult to maintain the
relationship among families living in some different places

GRAMMAR : COORDINATION AND SUBORDINATION


1.Coordinating

Example :
a. The baby cried all night
b. The mother kept sleeping

The baby cried all night, but the mother kept sleeping.

The most common coordinating conjunctions are : and || but || for || or || so || yet

2. Subordinating

Example :
Sam left the house after he had said goodbye to his family.
Although he didnt pass the exam, he looked very happy.
Note : if the subordinate clause begins the sentence, a comma
follows it.

A note is also a kind of letter
Contain brief message or information about one important
thing
Straight to the point on one side of a piece of paper
The purpose of a note are for offering help, explaining
something etc

GRAMMAR : ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS


Adjectives describe or modify nouns or pronouns

Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs

Many adverbs are formed from adjectives by adding an ly ending, such


as, beautiful becomes beautifully , happy becomes happily
