BIOGRAPHY

Louis I kahn was born into a poor jewish family in parnuand


spent the rest of his early childhood in kuressaare on the
estonian island of saaremaa,then part of the russian
empire.At age 3,he saw coals in te stove and was
captivated by the light of the coal.he put the coal in the
apron which later seared his face.he carried these scars or
the rest of his life.
In 1906,his family immigrated to the united states,fearing
that his father would be recalled into the military during the
russo-japanese war. His actual birth year may have been
inaccurately recorded in the process of immigration.
According to his son's documentary film in 2003 the family
couldn't afford pencils but made their own charcoal sticks
from burnt twigs so that Louis could earn a little money
from drawings and later by playing piano to accompany
silent movies.
He became anaturalized citizeon May 15, 1914. His father
changed their name in 1915 .

CAREER

He attended the University of Pennsylvania and


received his Bachelors degree in architecture at
the age of 24.
After college, he worked as a senior draftsman in
the office of Philadelphia City Architect John Molitor.
To find his inspiration, he traveled through Europe
visiting castles and medieval strongholds in 1928,
only 4 years after graduating.
He finally started his own firm in 1935.
While he still designed and worked as a design
critic on the side, Louis became a professor of
architecture at Yale school of Architecture.

STYLES
Kahn used many different shapes and lines to
create his masterpieces. However, among his
most famous creations, he seems to favor
both parallel and perpendicular lines. Through
his bold technique, he created streamline,
radical, and futuristic looking buildings. His
stile is his own, and his creations are
legendary, through the use of geometry, he
has created both beautiful works of art, and
useful establishments, for the whole world to
enjoy.

YALE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY

The Yale university art Gallery Said to be Kahns first significant commission.
Concept-he sets new concept such as symmetry,clear separation between
space and space used server and based on triangles and circles.
Material-concrete structure is seen on the roof making a hollow triangles
solutions which eliminates the false ceiling.enclosure is made through brick
walls and curtain walls,glass and steel.the floor are tile triangular lattice
formed tetrahedral concrete panels.inside most raw materials are no longer
that descend from the cornicse of the concrete walls where they hang the
work of art.horizontal bands on the brick facades are limestone.
Interiors-it is characterized by a system of precast concrete roof that houses
the gallery lighting and ventilation.the roof was an innovative structural
engineering hollow concrete tetrahedrons,which combines a number of
functions and give the interior a rich and changing quality.

BIOLOGICAL STUDIES

It is made to be a agarden of stone and water.


This building is built from reinforced concrete,marble,crystal,wood and this stand
with 2 parallel laboratories each 65 ft wide and 245 ft long.
It consist of 2 symmetrical buildings with a stream of water flowing in the middle
of a courtyard that separates the two.
Building has been designed to promote collaboration and thus there are no walls
saparating laboratories on any floor.
There is one floor in the basement and two above it on both sides.
The lighting fixtures have been designed to easily side along rails on the roof.
Each laboratory block have five study towers,with each tower containig 4
offices,except for those near the entrance to the court,which only contain two.
A diaonal wall allows scintists to have a view of pacific,and every study is fitted
with a combination of openable sliding and fixed glass panels in teak wood
frames.
A library is located on the 3rd level of the west end of the north building.the
auditorium and trustees room are located in the basement of the east building of
the institute.
In the courtyard is a citrus grove containing sevaral orderly rows of limetree.
Building allow warm and natural light to enter the building that leads to discovery.

MARGARET ESHERICK
HOUSE

Built in 1961.
The 2500 sq ft,single bedroom house is flat roofed,rectangular solid with its long side facing
the street.
The primary building materiel is concrete block with stucco facing.
House is divided into primary areas and servant spaces.
Primary areas are the 2 storey living room that occupies all of the house to the right of the
front door.most of its front wall is occupied by a built in bookcase that reaches up to the
horizontal window at the 2nd storey.the side wall contains a deep fireplace.
Adjacent servant space is a thin communication strip that contains the front and back door
plus the 2 balconies above them.the strip also contains the house stairways and a gallery at
top of the stairs that overlook the living room.
To the left of the front door is a primary space occupied by the foyer and dining room on the
ground floor and the bedroom on the upper floor.
At the far left of the house is the remainning servant space occupied on the ground floor by
kitchen,laundary and bathroom and on the upper floor by bathroom and closet.
On the upper floor,the bathtub is located in an adjoining area that contains a
fireplace.bathtub has sliding wooden cover that can be pulled over it to convert it into a
sofa besides the fireplace.
Building has a variety of windows like t shaped,tall thin windows.
The rear of the house faces a garden adjacent to wooded public park.it has 4 large single
pane windows arranged in pairs.these windows cant be opened.they are provided with cloth
roll shades for protection against the sun.

NORMAN FISHER
HOUSE,PENNSYLVANIA

It was designed in 1960.


It using stone masonary as base and wood framing as the walls.
House is located on a site which slopes gently down from a main road to
small stream.
It consist of three cubes,two large ones connected together and a
small,separate one.
These cubes,together with the existing trees,form two interconnected
outdoor spaces:an entrance court and a kitchen court.
Two large cubes,connected diagonally,contain two distinct groups of
activities.
The first cube contains an entrance lobby and the master bedroom suite with
dressing room and bathroom on the first floor and two smaller bedrooms on
the 2nd floor.
The 2nd cube is connected by a large opening to the entrance lobby.
The 2 storey high 1st floor contains the kitchen and the living area separated
by a free standing stone fireplace.
Throughout the house there are deeply recessed windows.these allow light
during winterand keep out direct light in summer.these also them to be
opend during storms without allowing rain to cime into the house.
There is a large stone hearth just off center in the living cube that creates a
slight separation in the living room.
The decision to create 2 distinct volumes was driven by the original dual
design requirement of and physicians office
