Wagon Workshop

Few Facts of Bangladesh Railway


First Name of Bangladesh Railway was Asam Bengal
Railway till 15th august 1947, after divided of
Pakistan and India, It change to Eastern Bengal
Railway. And again it's change in 1961 and Named
Pakistan Eastern Railway. Finally, it was change to
Bangladesh Railway after independent of our
motherland in 16th December of 1971.
First Rail line start in 15th November of 1862. It was
broad gauge and from Jogoti to Dorshona, total 53km.
After this, in 4th January 1885, 2nd rail line start from
Dhaka to Narayangong, total 15km.

Few Facts of Bangladesh Railway


At this time, in our country has 2734km rail line. And
there are two kinds of rail line, meter gauge and broad
gauge line.
Now, in Bangladesh have more than 1200 carriage
coach and 1400 wagon.
Everyday 280 carriage and wagon transport one place
to another place.
We have only two workshop for repair carriage and
wagon. Biggest one in Sheyedpur, Rajshahi and 2nd
one in Pahartoli, Chittagong where I completed my
industrial training.

Bangladesh Carriage & Wagon Workshop


Pahartoli, Chittagong
Its established in 1947, before this time it was use as
locomotive workshop of Asam Bengal Railway. It was
build in with total 35 acres area, 12 acres area with shed
and others 23 acres area without shed. It has 5 gates, 9.28
kilometers rail line and total 431 machine and structures.

Shops of Bangladesh Carriage & Wagon Workshop


There are two main shops, Carriage and
Wagon. And others shops are subsidiaryof
those two.
1. Carriage Shop
2. Wagon Shop
3. Wheel Shop
4. GOH Shop
5. Foundry Shop
6. Welding Shop
7. CHR Shop
8. Machine Shop
9. Tool Room Shop
10. Mill Wright Shop
11. Smithy Shop
12. Paint Shop
13. Progress Shop &
14. Training Shop (This for teach student)

Work Procedure of Carriage


Shop
Carriage Shop is one of the most important
shop of the Railway. In this shop, they repair
only carriage parts or carriage body. Carriage
body, its one kind passenger car.
There are total 5 kinds of schedule maintain of
carriage, but in the workshop only held three of
them except Special Maintenance. Cause, it is
not regularly maintaining.
In Carriage shop there are total 15 sections.

Schedule Maintaining of Carriage


LE (Lifting Enamel): It's need to do After 12 months
for Intercity and 18 months for Mail Express. Its must
be complete in 15 working days.
POH (Periodical Overhauling): 4 years for Intercity
and 6 years for Mail Express. Within 27 working days,
POH must be done.
GOH (General Overhauling): Its kinds of full repairing
of carriage body, every 12 years for Intercity and Mail
Express both. Need 45 days to complete this.

Work Procedure of Wagon Shop

In this shop, only wagon car being repaired. In


our country we have three kinds of wagon.
Tank Wagon
Open Wagon
Covered Wagon
There are two kinds of maintaining done in
this shop and it is one and only wagon repair
workshop in Bangladesh

Schedule Maintaining of Wagon

Every 6 months later need to do


repacking for Wagon and
POH (Periodical Overhauling): After 3
years 6 months need to do it with 27
working days.
And one more schedule for carriage and
wagon both, name "SpecialMaintenance".
It only needs to do, when need. There is
no specific timescheduleto do this.

Work Procedure of Wheel Shop

Wheel Shop containedwheel and axle


lathes, machines for axle-grinding, drilling,
boring, punching and milling to repair
vulnerable wheel. The wheel shop had an
electric overhead cranes of 5 tons.
Remove and Fitting bearing, washing grease
and grease again of wheel also done here.

Work Procedure of GOH Shop


GOH abbreviation General Overhauling.
Carriage need for GOH repair for Intercity
and Mail express every 12 years. It is full
repairing of carriage body. Every rejected
and faulted instrument will change, full floor
must be removed and mason the floor again.
It need 45 working days to complete GOH of
a carriage body.
GOH has been divided into 6 sections. Those
are Buffer & Tinsmith, Body Furnishing,
Shutter & Door, Fitting, Machine and last one
steel section.

Work Procedure of Foundry


Shop
In Foundry Shop needed jobs such as break
block, connecting pin are prepared by
melting and pouring metal into moulds. It
has two sections,
1. Ferrous Section &
2. Non-ferrous Section

For Ferrous Section they use Cupola Furnace


and Crucible Furnace for Non-Ferrous
Section.

Work Procedure of Welding


Shop
Its one the important shop of this Workshop. All
welding work done and control from this shop.
There are so many works of Gas cutting and arc
welding. For gas cutting they use oxygen
cylinder and gas line. And for arc welding they
use Oxygen and Acetylene cylinder.
There are two kinds of Welding,
1. Fusion Welding &
2. Non Fusion Welding

Shop
Welding work process in different shops, so this shop
has been divided into 6 sections.
1. Carriage Shop
2. GOH Shop
3. Wagon Shop
4. CHR Shop
5. Bogie Shop &
6. Special.

Work Procedure of CHR Shop


CHR abbreviation Carriage Heavy Repair. When
carriage shop can not repair or have no ability to repair
any carriage body, then they send the carriage body to
CHR Shop. Its also a subsidiary shop of Carriage shop.

Work Procedure of Machine


Shop
Machine Shop, its always ready skilled labors
to manufacture and/or repair parts. When any small parts
of carriage and wagon need to repair, they send letters to
the machine shop for repair those parts or manufacture a
new one.
Machine Shop Has Three Section,
Machine Section
Turing Section
Fitting Section.

Work Procedure of Tool Room


Shop
It is a shop where tools are made and repaired for use
throughout the rest of a Workshop specially machine
shop. In this shop, they make precision tools with the
precision lathe machine and check it by surface plate and
gauge.
For increasing the life time of a tool, they do tempering,
hardening and normalizing. Those also do in this shop.

Work Procedure of Millwright


Shop
In this shop, they repairs components and
equipment for all workshops. They repair
compressors, screw jack, hydraulic jack,
lifting jig, motors, overhead crane, traverser,
boiler, furnace of foundry etc.
There are 5 sections in this shop,
Motor and Machine
Machine Maintenance Repair
Compressor
Overhead Crane, Traverser, Boiler
Machine Maintenance Repair (Same as 2nd one)

Work Procedure of Smithy Shop


Usually few little parts of Carriage and
wagon manufacture and repair in this shop.
Such as, buffer head, buffer hook, chain &
ware, spring, forging, annealing, tempering
etc.
This shop has been divided into three
sections,
Forging Section
Spring Section
Chain Section

Work Procedure of Paint Shop


Mainly, All painting work done in this shop
for carriage and wagon body both.
For Carriage, there are three sections,
Painting Section
Trimming Section
Lettering Section
Others

For Wagon, there are two sections only,


Painting Section

Work Procedure of Progress


Shop
Progress Shop, its call brain of Workshop. Cause
all kinds of document, job card, process of
carriage and wagon control from here. When a
coach come into the workshop, they do an
inspection and send letter to specific shop where
need to repair this coach. All schedule reports
and documents are they keep in this shop.
There are three kinds of Card they keep and
maintain,
Job Card
Progress Card
Gate Pass or Delivery Card

Work Procedure of Training


Center
Its not a Shop or directly helpful for
Carriage or Wagon. But for the future,
its so much important cause it
teaches us and apprentice student
about railways. And really, Im grateful
to all, specially Shoykot Jaman Sir of
the training center.
