What does Smart Grid mean?

A smart grid is an electricity network based on

digital technology that is used to supply

electricity to consumers via two-way digital
communication. This system allows for
monitoring, analysis, control and communication
within the supply chain to help improve
efficiency, reduce the energy consumption and
cost, and maximize the transparency and
reliability of the energy supply chain.

Components of SMART GRID

Intelligent appliances
Smart power meters
Smart substations
Smart distribution
Smart generation

NEED
Line loss
Greenhouse gas emissions
Fuel costs
Regulatory concerns
Government mandates and myriad other

issues necessitate another look at how

electricity is generated and delivered.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES
RESILIENT
ROBUSTNESS
SELF HEALING

RESILIENCE
Resilience is the property of a material
to absorb energy when it is deformed
elastically and then, upon unloading to have
this energy recovered. In other words,
it is the maximum energy per volume that can
be elastically stored. It is
represented by the area under the curve in
the elastic region in the StressStrain
diagram.

What is Robustness?
The quality of being able to withstand

stresses, pressures, or changes in procedure

or circumstance.
A system, organism or design may be said to
be "robust" if it is capable of coping well with
variations (sometimes unpredictable
variations) in its operating environment with
minimal damage, alteration or loss of
functionality.

Self Healing Grid

A system that uses information, sensing, control and

communication technologies to allow it to deal with
unforeseen events and minimize their adverse impact .
Why is self healing concept important to the
Energy Infrastructure?
A secure architected sensing, communications,
automation (control), and energy overlaid
infrastructure
as an integrated, reconfigurable, and electronically
controlled system that will offer unprecedented
flexibility and functionality, and improve system
availability, security, quality, resilience and robustness

non-participative with power
system

Informed, involved, and active

consumers - demand response
and
distributed energy resources.

Dominated by central
generation- many obstacles
exist for distributed energy
resources interconnection

Many distributed energy

resources
with plug-and-play convenience
focus
on renewable

Limited wholesale markets,

not well
integrated - limited
opportunities for
Consumers

Mature, well-integrated
wholesale
markets, growth of new
electricity
markets for consumers

Continued.
Focus on outages - slow response

to power quality issues

Little integration of operational

data with asset management business process silos

Responds to prevent further

damage- focus

Vulnerable to malicious acts of

terror and natural disasters

Power quality is a priority with a

variety of quality/price options rapid resolution of issues

Greatly expanded data acquisition

of grid parameters - focus on

prevention, minimizing impact to
consumers
Automatically detects and

responds to problems - focus on

prevention, minimizing impact to
consumer
Resilient to attack and natural

disasters.
