Problem
The force F on a particular body immersed in a
stream of fluid depends only on the body length
L, stream velocity V, fluid density , and fluid
viscosity : F=f(L,V, , ). Suppose, you must
find the function f experimentally. Make an effort
to reduce the number of experiments you need
to perform.
Problem
problema.

Nondimensionalization of Equations
To nondimensionalize, for example, the Bernoulli
equation, the first step is to list primary
dimensions of all dimensional variables and
constants
{p} = {m/(t2L)}
{g} = {L/t2}
{} = {m/L3}
{z} = {L}
{V} = {L/t}
12
Nondimensionalization of Equations
By inspection, nondimensionalize all variables
with scaling parameters
13
Nondimensionalization of Equations
Divide by 0U02 and set * = 1 (incompressible
flow)
14
Nondimensionalization of Equations
Note that convention often dictates many of the
nondimensional parameters, e.g., 1/20U02 is typically
used to nondimensionalize pressure.
15
Nondimensionalization of Equations
Advantages of nondimensionalization
Increases insight about key parameters
Decreases number of parameters in the
problem
Easier communication
Fewer experiments
Fewer simulations

Problem
The drag of a sonar transducer is to be
predicted, based on wind tunnel test data. The
prototype, a 1 ft diameter sphere, is to be towed
at 5 knots (nautical miles per hour) in seawater
at 5C. The model is 6 in in diameter. Determine
the required test speed in air. If the drag of the
model at test conditions is 5.58 lbf, estimate the
drag of the prototype.
