Competition
China is the worlds largest producer and one of the worlds top exporters of fruits and
vegetables. According to FAO, China produces nearly half of the worlds vegetables
and 16 percent of the worlds fruit, including 36 percent of the worlds apples.
Problems
Problems
Infrastructure
Further, EU requires these tests only for imports from Egypt and India, while imports
from countries such as the USA and Argentina are exempted from such tests.
Another problem is that while there is no import duty on 50-kg bags, there is a duty on
5-kg bags, as the foreign markets want to discourage retail consignments.
Exporters also face problems regarding genetically modified peanuts (GMOs). Some
years ago, a particular foreign market encouraged the use of GMOs; however, another
market has now asked for an assurance that peanuts supplied are free of GMOs.
Opportunities/Recommendati
ons
India can become one of the largest fruit and vegetable exporters through technology up
gradation, quality management, firm adherence to export commitments and acquisition
of appropriate negotiation skills.
Strong footing in agriculture provides a large and varied raw material base for food
processing.
Opportunities/Recommendatio
ns
The Indian food processing industry is primarily export oriented. Indias geographical
situation gives it the unique advantage of connectivity to Europe, the Middle East,
Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Korea. One such example indicating Indias
location advantage is the value of trade in agriculture and processed food between
India and Gulf region.
