Competition

vegetables. According to FAO, China produces nearly half of the worlds vegetables
and 16 percent of the worlds fruit, including 36 percent of the worlds apples.

Top Fruit Producers

Fresh Fruit Export Market Share, by

value, 2001-2003

Problems

Vast majority of holdings are small and un-irrigated

Large tracts of low and unproductive plantations needing replacement

/ rejuvenation.

Low productivity of crops due to inferior genetic stocks and poor

management.

Inadequate supply of quality planting materials of improved varieties

High incidence of pests and diseases

Heavy post harvest losses and low utilization in processing sector

Problems

Infrastructure

Different testing procedures and conformity assessment standards are required in

different markets no one has communicated to the exporters why most of these tests are
needed.

Further, EU requires these tests only for imports from Egypt and India, while imports
from countries such as the USA and Argentina are exempted from such tests.

Another problem is that while there is no import duty on 50-kg bags, there is a duty on
5-kg bags, as the foreign markets want to discourage retail consignments.

Exporters also face problems regarding genetically modified peanuts (GMOs). Some
years ago, a particular foreign market encouraged the use of GMOs; however, another
market has now asked for an assurance that peanuts supplied are free of GMOs.

Opportunities/Recommendati
ons

Abundant investment opportunities are there in expanding the export market. An

increasing acceptance of new products with market development efforts has been
witnessed lately given the fact that there is a good international demand for certain
fruits and vegetable products. Exports of mangoes, grapes, mushrooms have started
going to the United Kingdom, Middle East, Singapore and Hong Kong. and among
vegetable, onion occupies first position Potatoes and green vegetables like okra, bitter
gourd, green chilies have good export potential.

India can become one of the largest fruit and vegetable exporters through technology up
gradation, quality management, firm adherence to export commitments and acquisition
of appropriate negotiation skills.

Strong footing in agriculture provides a large and varied raw material base for food
processing.

Opportunities/Recommendatio
ns

The Indian food processing industry is primarily export oriented. Indias geographical
situation gives it the unique advantage of connectivity to Europe, the Middle East,
Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Korea. One such example indicating Indias
location advantage is the value of trade in agriculture and processed food between
India and Gulf region.

There should be technology up gradation, quality management, firm adherence to

export commitments and acquisition of appropriate negotiation skills.

Recommendations

Integrate all schemes offered for export promotion through various

Ministries and allied agencies

Strengthen food processing infrastructure in identified Agri-Export Zones

Encourage food testing laboratories to get accreditation from

international agencies

Set-up independent world class food testing and inspection

infrastructure, particularly in clusters with significant presence of
exporters.

Devise an alternate system of processing grade products specifications

based on internationally accepted norms

Promote aggregation of exports to meet the minimum order requirement

of importers

Recommendations

Develop a strong market intelligence system to aid exporters to take

rational decisions

Introduce certification zoning systems like pesticide free zones;

organic production zones; disease free zones to facilitate high value
exports from India

Promote certification of organic farming for different crops

Build global brands on the back of Indias strengths

Support a responsive research development infrastructure to provide

technological upgradation for sustenance and growth of export
market share.
