BRAKES AND

DYNAMOMETERS

What is brake

brake is a mechanical device which

produce frictional resistance against
moving machine member, in order to
stop the motion of machine

Capacity of brake depends on

Unit pressure between the braking surfaces.

The coefficient of friction between the braking surfaces.

The peripheral velocity of the brake drum.

The projected area of the friction surfaces.

Heat dissipating capacity of brake.

CHARACTERISTIC OF BRAKING
MATERIAL

High coefficient of friction.

Low wear rate.

High heat resistance.

high heat dissipation capacity.

high mechanical strength.
Not affected by moisture and oil

Material used for brake lining are (1) bronze in C.I (2) Steel on C.I
(3) Wood on C.I (4) Leather on Metal

dynamometer
Dynamometer is a device to measure the frictional resistance .
Knowing the Frictional resistance, we may obtain the torque
transmitted and hence the power of the engine.

DYNAMOMETER
ABSORPTION DYNAMOMETER :- (PRONY BRAKE DYNAMOMETER, ROPE BRAKE
DYNAMOMETER)
IN THE ABSORPTION DYNAMOMETER POWER PRODUCED BY THE ENGINE IS ABSORBED BY
THE FRICTIONAL RESISTANCES OF THE BRAKE AND TRANSFORMED INTO HEAT DURING THE
PROCESS OF MEASUREMENT.

TRANSMISSION DYNAMOMETER:- (EPICYCLIC TRAIN DYNAMOMETER, BELT

TRANSMISSION DYNAMOMETER, TORSIONAL DYNAMOMETER)
IN TRANSMISSION DYNAMOMETER THE ENERGY PRODUCED BY THE ENGINE IS
TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE DYNAMOMETER TO SOME OTHER MECHANISM.
THE ENERGY IS NOT WASTED IN FRICTION BUT IS USED FOR DOING WORK.
