Award??
The purpose of the Deming Prize was to
recognize those who excelled in quality
control and as a way of driving quality control.
It was also established to commemorate Dr.
Deming for his contributions and impact on
the Japanese industry

Who was Dr. Deming??

William Edwards Deming
Born October 14th 1900 in Sioux City, Iowa
1917, University of Wyoming at Laramie
1921, graduated with a B.S in Electrical

Engineering
1925, M.S. from University of Colorado
1928, Ph.D. from Yale University
Got into U.S. Census Bureau in 1940
Started his own private practice in 1946
Conducted classes on Statistics and QC at New
York University

Shewhart Medal in 1956
Was awarded the Second Order Medal of the

Sacred Treasure in 1960 by the Emperor of Japan

Samuel S. Wilks Award from the American
Statistical Association and election to the National
Academy of Engineering in 1983
Inducted into the Science and Technology Hall of
Fame, Dayton, 1986
National Medal of Technology in 1987 by President
Reagen
Distinguished Career in Science award in 1988 by
the National Academy of Sciences
Inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1991

Dr. Deming visits Japan in 1950
Eight Day course on Quality Control in Kanda-

Surugadai
Followed by One Day course on QC for Top
Management at Hakone
Transcripts of the lectures were compiled and
distributed for a charge
Dr. Deming donated his royalties to JUSE
Mr. Kenichi Koyanagi, M.D. JUSE proposed to use this
to fund a prize to commemorate Dr. Demings
contribution
