The Celts went

to Britain and
they mixed in
with the
natives who
lived in there.
All this happened
two thousand seven
hundred years ago.
People before the
Celts became
known as Britons
and they were
grouped in tribes.
In the beginning, the Romans didn’t want to
conquer Britain because the British tribes were
always waiting to fight
the Romans on
the beach.
Finally Julius Caesar
decided to attack them
with an army of 10,000 men.
Given that the British tribes had helped the
Celts in Europe, the Romans punished them
with an invasion. The Romans’ strength caused
the Britons’ defeat. After the Romans’ victory,
Caesar left and didn’t go back to Britain for
ninety seven years.
In AD 43, Claudius, the Roman Emperor,
wanted his army to go to Britain to make it part
of the Roman Empire. They achieved their
objective with alliances. The Britons took
refuge from the Romans in the mountains of
Wales and Scotland.
 The towns and cities
that were built by the
Romans became
centres of trade.

 Thanks to the goods’ sales, some Roman Britons

got rich.
 For a few years they lived in peace because they
had built good roads so the legions could go quickly
to any part of Britain.
To avoid that
the Romans
were attacked
from Scotland,
the Emperor
Hadrian built a
wall
Before Christianity
began to expand
through the Roman
Empire, the Romans
believed in many gods
and many goddesses.
Their holy places were
the new temples that
they had built. They
also worshipped
emperors as gods.
Finally Christianity
replaced polytheism.
Raiders who made attacks on Britain, Saxon
pirates and Barbarians who attacked the
Roman Empire caused that the Romans
couldn’t keep Britain safe, and left to defend
other parts of the Empire. Then Britons
returned to their old way of life.
