KEY PLAN

Udavi school, auroville is a 20 minute drive from


matri mandir.
It is a government aided institution.
TOTAL SITE AREA:
The school site covers an area of 18 acres.
The built area in total is 7 acres.
SURROUNDING LAND USE:
The site is surround by dense trees on all the
sides.
APPROACH:
The building approached by 3m narrow road
towards its northeast side.

His idea was to
explore
sustainability but
not just to introduce
the many renewable
and appropriate
technologies
developed in
Auroville.

CLIMATE - AUROVILLE
The climate in Auroville is semitropical and
the main monsoon stretches from October till
December.
From December to March the daytime
temperature is between 24C and 30C.
Occasional rainfall in July brings the
temperature down. Nights are generally about
5C cooler than the days.
The average rainfall is 1,230 mm. a year. The
prevailing wind blows from the southeast.

COMMUTATION
The bus stop is located at a piece of
land that belongs to auroville, opposite
to the main entrance.
There is a single bus that operates
for the school
It has a seating capacity of 35.
The rest of the students of this
school come by cycles, walk or by
their own transport.

INFERENCES
There is a major inconvenience in
the access road.
Its a narrow road, leading to the
school.
This may prove to be a
disadvantage, during the school
hours, especially during mornings and
evenings.

THE HIGH SCHOOL


The high school has 2
separate blocks

BLOCK 1

Block 1 consists of 10
class rooms and it
includes math lab,
science lab, English
lab, activity room.
The labs are located
on the second floor.
The capacity of each
classroom ranges
from 12-15 students.

The block has 3 staircase


in which 2 staircase are
located on its east and
west side of the building.
Another staircase is
located at the centre of
the block.
Each class is of
dimension of each class
is 6mx5m with a strength
of 15 students .
The building has g+1
floors.

BLOCK 2
The second block consists
of 6 classes. Each class is of
6mX5m.
The block has stair case in
west side and in the centre.
The front face has
archaded openings done by
exposed brick masonary.
Open assembly hall which
upto 1m long linear fencing
stones .
The floor has cement
flooring.
It has trees and shrubs on
the surrounding of the
assembly area.

INFERENCES

The classes are


conjusted due to the
size and seating
arrangement of the
furniture.
The tables and
chairs can be
replaced so that the
circulation spaces
provide easy
movement.

In the higher secondary
block the front faade has
exposed brick archaded
work. Here they used
second class bricks
manufactured in auroville.

GATHERING SPOT FOR
THE CHILDREN .

THAT TREE.

TAILORING ROOM
The tailoring room is
open for both, the local
aurovilan people as well
as for students.

The roof of the tailoring


room is made of R.C.C.
precasted inverted u
shaped frames.

THE PRAYER HALL

The prayer hall has a capacity


of 60 students.
The east side wall of the
prayer hall has windows from
the ground level to the
ceiling.
The have movable louvers
attached to it. Which can be
adjusted according to the sun
light.
The roof of the prayer hall
has vaults of bricks which is
suspended on concrete
beams and columns which
run on the either side of the
building.

DRAWING ROOM
The drawing room is the most
striking feature in the block
The drawing room has a
mezzanine level in it .
The stairs leading to the
mezzanine is cut out from rocks
. The stairs do not have railings
and it freely suspended on one
end and it is supported in its
other end by a connection to
the wall.
The mezzanine level has a
vaulted roof and it has large
windows on it.

MATERIALS USED

The building has very less amount of concrete

used and hence it absorbs very less heat.


The building has larger windows with movable
louvers attached to it ,which could be adjusted
according to the sunlight.
The building has large vertical louvers in it which
are inclined to an angle so that the direct sunlight
does not enter into the building and brings in large
amount of light in to the building.

The

building has large pond in the center which is 2


feet deep.
The pond here acts as an aesthetic element but at
the same it cool up the area and helps in
maintaining moderate temperature in the building.
But the disadvantage is that this feature is tedious
for secondary school children while playing around
the corridor.

The roof consists of 4
layers
Roof tiles
Mixture of cement and
thermacole in the ratio
of 1:6. this acts as a
heat insulating
material.

FURNITURES AND INFERENCE


There is no
convenient furniture
in the primary and
secondary school
blocks.
o This proves to be a
disadvantage and
therefore furniture
must be provided
for convenience.
