Task 6

Artist I would have on the front cover of my music magazine:

Ariana Grande Ariana Grandes songs are part of the pop genre which is
the same as my magazines genre. However some of her music also
features some rap and this could widen the range of the target audience
for the magazine. Her target audience is females between the age of 1625 and this links nicely to my magazine she has an almost identical target
audience to my magazine. I think a female on the front cover would be
good as the target audience can relate to her as she is around the same
age group as them.

Beyonc - The majority of Beyoncs songs are a mix between pop and R&B.
She is represented as a strong independent woman and portrays this
through her songs. This would be a relatable aspect for my target
audience, as its an age group that are still young and normally
independent for example university students. Her target audience for
females is ages 18-24 but she gets a lot of fans both above and below this
age range. She also has male fans and this would widen the target
audience reach. Beyonc is known word wide and is an musical icon.
Therefore she would be a good person to be on the front cover of a
music magazine as she is well known and has a vast amount of fans that
are likely to buy the magazine if she was in it.

5 seconds of summer 5 SOS are a current pop/ rock boy group. Their
target audience is both girls and boys aged between 15-20. They
would be a good band to have on the front cover as the target
audience are likely to be attracted to the band members and want
to pick up the magazine and read more. They also have a strong fan
base and this would mean that existing fans are likely to buy the
magazine. They have fans that are both older and younger than
there targeted audience and this would give the magazine a wider
range of audience buying the magazine. Their music is upbeat and
catchy and they would be a good group to represent the magazine
as they would be the first item the reader can see on the magazine.
This therefore makes it important that the person on the front
cover connotes a positive, fun image.

Katy Perry Katy Perry songs are predominantly pop which would fit
well with my magazine genre. Her target audience is mainly females
and males aged between 13 and 21 which is similar to my
magazines target audience. Her music is catchy, fun and exciting
and she would connote a positive message to readers if she was on
the front cover of my magazine. She is known world wide and is a
pop icon, this is another benefit of her being on the magazines
front cover as she has a big fan base and they would purchase the
magazine knowing that she was featured in it. She is also a very
influence female and readers would buy the magazine to know
what her thoughts on music are etc.

The Vamps - The Vamps are a British pop boy band. There target
audience is 15-19 year old teenagers (mainly girls), which is similar
to my magazines target audience. They are relatively new to the
music industry but already have a big fan based that would support
them and buy the magazine. The magazines target audience could
be attracted to the boy band and this could make them want to buy
the magazine.

Mise-en-scene
A lot of pop magazines have plain backgrounds for the front cover to
allow the focus to be purely on the artist. The background is normally
white or grey and then the artist is in bright or bold colours to make
them stand out. However these magazines have a few bits of miseen-scene like a micro phone, stereo player or something that could
connote pop music for example vibrant flowers.

Vibrant flowers to
connote pop
music.

Micro phone to relate

the artist to the
music magazine.

A stereo to
connote music.

Double
page
spread
Mise-en-scene on the double page spread can make an image more

interesting or help the reader link the artist to what type music they
sing or what there profession is. For example the artist could be holding
single objects like a micro-phone or a CD of theirs and this connotes to
the reader that they are a singer or that they have brought out an
album. However sometimes objects like chairs and sofas are introduced
into the image to make the image look more interesting than just the
artist standing alone. For example the image below of Rihanna laying on
a zebra print sofa makes the image look more fun and it interesting for
the reader to look at.

Here the artist is

holding a camera
which links to the
article on the
other page.

Chairs and sofas to make the

image more interesting and
different from the usual standing
up on their own.

Clothes my artist would wear

A lot of female pop singers are shown wearing dresses in photo
shoots in magazines. A dress gives the artist a feminine and fun
look. Some dresses are quite simple to focus on the artist but some
are bright and are the main attraction in the picture. A lot of pop
artists wear bright colours, this is to make the picture look exciting
also makes the artist stand out. For my magazine I would make my
female artist wear something that grabs the readers attention so
the focus is purely on the artist. The images tend to portray the
artist in a sexualised way to make them look attractive to the
reader.

Clothes my artist would wear

Male pop artist mainly wear casual clothes in magazines photon shoots.
Jeans, T-shirts and unbuttons shirts seem to be a running theme in all of
the pictures. These clothes create a casual cool look and it makes the
images feel more informal and personal to the reader. The artist for my
magazine would be wearing the same types of clothes to create the
same effect.

Casual plain t-shirts

Jeans

Make up my artist would wear:

Many pop artist have a natural make up look, but then have a pop of
bright and vibrant colour somewhere. This is normally on the lips but
another example is Katy Perry having blue eye liner. My artist in my
magazine would also have similar make up to this where the look is
natural but it brightened up a bit with a lipstick to make it look more
interesting and fun.

Charts

All of the top songs in the ITunes charts are part of the pop genre. Pop music is the
popular music at that current time so it will always be in the charts as the songs have to
be popular and be downloaded a lot in order for the song to be a pop song.

Possible artist that would fit my genre.

Popular artist at the moment are Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeren, one direction, Ella
Henderson, Ellie Goulding, Olly Murs, Ariana Grande, Charlie XCX, and Jessie J.
Because these artist are all popular at the time they would all fit into my
magazine genre of pop. My magazine will be based on the artists whose music
is currently popular so this would change when different artist and songs get
higher in the charts.
