make sense of the current situation, so one
can have choices about what is passed on to
the future.
Visually shows that the nature and the
degree of intensity of the emotional
responses that are passed down from
generation to generation

Shows not only the names of people

who belong to your family lineage, but
how these relatives relate to each
other.
Genograms look for patterns that
connect (Bateson,2000 ).
Patterns indicate how family members
pass on their view of the world, including
strengths, resiliencies as well as
dysfunctional patterns.

What is a Genogram?
It is a format for drawing a
family tree that
1. PROVIDES a picture of family
structure over at least three generations
2. CHARTS the relational
characteristics and emotional processes
of the family over time

on key life events, which includes

VOCATIONAL & CAREER CHOICES
MEDICAL & HEALTH ISSUES

Making the genogram

A complete genogram includes

Complete names and ages of all family
members, geographical locations,
religious background, special skills or
talents.
Exact dates of birth, marriage, separation,
divorce, death and other significant life
events.

Making the genogram

Also
Notations about occupation, places of
residence, illness, causes of death and
changes in life course and dates on 3 or
more generations
Plus anything which can describe your
families.
