Task 4b

The genre I have chosen for my magazine is...

ROCK

Why I have chosen this

genre
I chose this genre because I have lots of experience buying and reading rock
magazines such as Kerrang' and 'Rock Sound', and so I know what features and
conventions to include in order to entice the target audience or niche market (a
particular audience type) to buy the magazine.
Furthermore, lots of people enjoy listening to rock music and so there is a large
target audience / niche market that I can reach out to. Additionally I can base my
magazine on different types of rock, for example modern or old school rock. This
will enable me to read out to a wider audience as more people will be interested
and like the people included in the magazine, hence they will buy it.
Another reason why I want to use rock as my chosen genre is because I like rock
music and so it will be more enjoyable for me to create. Furthermore it is a
common convention of rock magazines to have an informal mode of address
which I like because of the friendly atmosphere you can create.

KERRANG
Kerrang is a rock music magazine first published on June 6th 1981. It
was originally a one off project and was published by the Bauer Media
Group, however its immediate popularity resulted it being produced
on a monthly basis. Since it was first published in 1981, it has become
one of the best selling music magazines, and has also got its own
radio channel and TV channel. Its target audience (mainly male aged
15 34, but also has female readers of the same age range) is similar
to that of my target audience. This is because the genre of our
magazines are the same, and so will have a similar target audience.

BAUER MEDIA GROUP

The Bauer Media Group is the largest privately owned publishing company
in Europe. Based in the UK, it has two main focuses magazines and radio.
Such magazines they have published include music, home and interiors,
gardens, lifestyle and cars etc. From publishing so many famous (music)
magazines such as Kerrang, Q, and NME, it has gained a lot of experience
about publishing and in the process has reached a wider target audience.
Because it publishes so many magazines, it has gained such a wide, varied
audience of both genders, different ethnicities and a rage of ages. For
example Kerrang has a target audience of white males aged 15-25, whereas
a home and interior magazine would have a target audience of white
females aged 25-40.

I think that the Bauer Media group would be a suitable publisher because
its had countless experience publishing different genres of magazines
especially rock music. They don't really specialise in any other genre of
music, and so are professionals on the genre that i have chosen for my
magazine. Furthermore they have a vast target audience which would help
my magazine reach out to its niche market and target the right age range,
ethnicity and gender. However a possible reason why I wouldnt use this
publisher is because there are other publishers such as ICP who have more
experience in publishing rock music magazines.
