definition
The words holism and holistic are
derived from the Greek word holos,
meaning whole.
Holism is based on an understanding that
the whole is greater than the sum of its
parts.

An approach to medical care that

emphasises the study of all
aspects of persons health,
including physical, psychological,
social, and cultural factors.

What does Holistic means?

Holistic therapies have been around
for thousands of years and were
commonly used in ancient Egypt,
China and India for their therapeutic
effects.
5

Holistic means care for the whole

person, mind, body, and spirit.
The holistic approach to health
differences from the conventional
medical approach in that it takes into
account the whole patient rather than
just focusing on the symptom or the
part that has the problem.
6

Holistic medicine is a term used to

describe therapies that attempt to
treat the whole person. That is,
instead of treating an illness, as
orthodox allopathy, holistic medicine
looks at an indiviuals overall
physical, mental, spiritual, and
emotional well-being before
recommending treatment.
7

A practitioner with a holistic

approach treats the symptoms of
illness as well as looking for the
underlying cause of illness.

Holistic medicine also attempts to

prevent illness by placing a
greater emphasis on optimizing
health. the bodys system are
seen as interdependent parts of
the persons whole being.

the part of body which is no longer
working correctly and fails to deal
with the imbalance which caused
the problem in the first place.

13

Complementary and alternative

medicines use non-invasive and
non-pharmaceutical techniques
as an alternative to the
conventional medicine
approach. holistic medicines
include (also as alternative or
complementary medicine).
14

What is the history behind it?

Holistic medicine has its roots in
several ancient healing traditions
that stress healthy living and
being in harmony with nature.

15

Socrates promoted a holistic

approach.
Hippocrates, emphasized the
bodys ability to heal itself .

16

The word holistic was first

introduced by the South African
philosopher and statesman Jan
Christian Smuts in Holism and
evolution(1926).The word and the
concept lay more or less forgotten
until the 1970s
17

It was not until 1926, that Jan

Christiaan Smuts coined the term
holism. Which has given us the
more integrated concept of
psychosomatic medicine now
known as holistic medicine.In the
1970s, holistic became a more
common term.
18

Today , holistic medicine is

known as approach to life and
health which brings together the
physical, mental, and spiritual
aspects of a person in order to
create a total sense of well
being.
19

Description

how the physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual
elements of body are
interconnected to maintain
wellness (holistic health).
20

Holistic health is not itself a

method of treatment, but instead
an approach to how treatment
should be applied.

21

In traditional medicine patient is

only passively involved. In contrast,
holistic approaches patients are
active participant in the healing
process.
