Treatment

Olanike Dairo
What my documentary is setting
out to achieve?
 I am challenging the fact that gospel is music is not as popular as other music genres,
so showing a documentary on it would be challenging as its appeal to only an certain
amount of people. So it challenges the preconceptions of what people think or know
of gospel music. I will be doing these by making the documentary to be live and very
upbeat and youthful, meaning not showing any other forms of gospel or people within
my documentary.
 I am exploring the view that gospel music is not popular and not well known by many.
Having sources that are gospel artists which have recent won music awards such as
the Mobo’s would be able to help me to explore it more.
 I an investigating the contributions that gospel music has within the music/ media
industry. Having sources such as gospel clothing designer shows how fashion is now
contributing to the gospel industry.
 I am proving that gospel music within the UK is growing and is not stagnant. I will be
showing this by going to gospel events with the documentary and showing choirs and
artist performing as well as catwalks.
Content of my Idea
 My topic is about gospel music and the angle I am taking into my
documentary is about how gospel music is growing with the UK and its other
contributions such has dance and fashion.
 The Unique Selling Point of my documentary is not only that there is no
other similar text to what plan made to exist but that its aimed to an
target audience that it would not usually target.
 Majority of people within the UK do not know or listen to gospel music, so in
my documentary I would want to find out why gospel music is not promoted
like other genres of music and why many people don’t know about it.
 I will show vox pops of the general public of what they already know of
gospel music to get an general overview, then I would have an interview with
an expert guest which would conclude why gospel music unpopular.
Structure & Running Order
 Segment 1-Intro (voiceover saying what gospel music is and how it
established using cutaway shots and images.)
• Segment 2-Vox pops (asking people what they already know about
gospel music) asked by an female presenter. Ilford shopping centre
• Segment 3- one presenter (my friend) has an interview with expert
guest, gospel music artist Victizzle talking about his way of promoting
gospel music. Backstage After his performance
• Segment 4- voiceover talking about how gospel music has grown using
footage of teenage choir singing. At my church
• Segment 5- interview with music producer, TP who talks about the
growth of gospel music. In his studio
• Segment 6- presenter talks about the other ways gospel music is
contributing to industry. Outside an gospel clothing line show
• Segment 7- interview with gospel fashion designer Deborah who talks
about her entrepreneur and how it is good for the industry, so also
would be encouraging to others. Makeup artist backstage
• Segment 8- presenter conclude about gospel music, and is outside an
gospel event. Presenter informs the audience where to go listen to
music and where to buy clothing products.
Profile of Target Audience and
Appeal of Your Idea
 Age - 16-24 I would have young presenters and all my sources would range from the ages of 16-24 this would appeal to the audience as they portray an young image in what
they do.
 Gender – 50 males 50 females- My sources would be evenly spread out so that both male and female can be able to relate to someone with the same gender as them.
 Location - People who live in the UK can watch it within the UK people who live in London will watch it as they would find it local which will appeal to people in the area as
they are able to find it local and even recognize the location.
 Ambitions – people who have goals to be an musician, music artist, songwriter etc anything that is creative such as designing clothes , furniture, buildings etc would be
inspired to fulfil their goals, as sources in my documentary would be people who are young which fulfilled they own goals.
 Employment status/ Education -A-level, Degree level or even no education- within my documentary such as young gospel artists or young entrepreneur designers can
encourage people in education or not even in education to keep doing what they are doing despite all the barriers coming towards them eg. No money. This can give an drive
and motivation for people to stay in study or get an job or even start their own business.
 Disposable Income - £50-£400 depending on the level of education and occupation The documentary would inform the audience of where to go to do to buy gospel clothing
line products or to go to free music events.
 Ethnicity – all ethics but mostly white and black- within the documentary my vox pops
mainly would be a mixture of all ethics as possible to appeal to everyone.
 Opinions - for people of all beliefs- gospel music is from an Christian belief so
Christianity would be targeted but having people in my vox pops which our clearly from
other religions than Christianity or people with no religion at all would also be featured
to appeal to everyone. I do not want the documentary to offend different groups of
people including Christians so the focus is just on gospel music.
 Existing Media Consumption/ favourite media text -TV ,radio , magazines, MVT ,music
videos, talk shows People who do watch a lot of music videos and a range of different
genres in music channels and fashion programmes would be appealed to watching my
documentary as elements of this programmes would feature in my documentary.
 Social Economic -E mainly and from C1-D- Most of my target audience would be
student studying and may be looking for an new interest, change in lifestyle etc. to get
away from all the work load and stress from exams . Gospel music could be a new way
for them to help them to relax and to up lift them from the stress.
 Niche - people tend to prefer unique documentaries rather than obvious mainstream
topics according from my research, gospel music would be seen niche as a lot of people
do not really know of it.
Explanation of Research & Key
Findings
 Textual Analysis - From my textual analysis research I wanted find
similar texts to what I would do or similar topics if not exact. I had to
find out the audience and look deep into the contexts of the film, I
was looking for style, content, use of music, camera, editing and
convections, so that I see the ones which I would want to have in
documentary. Watching these video’s helped me to see how I would
want to set out my documentary. Everything that I gathered from this
research was qualitative research from secondary sources which I
analysed.
 Focus Groups - From my focus group I set out to find out my audience
opinions on my documentary and also to see if they views would affect
my audience viability for my idea. The focus group helped me to
examine my audience to help me with defining my audience. my
response was more qualitative than qualitative as I was asking
questions to get full response rather than short responses and primary
as it was an focus group for my target audience.
 Primary Research -my primary research was when I had to produce questionnaires and give
it out to my target audience. I set to find out information about my audience what they like
to in they spare time, how much they income disposal they have, religion etc. I also wanted
to find out how my audience would want my documentary to be styled seeing their taste on
other TV consumptions which can help influence my documentary positively. I also examined
the content of what will actually do into my documentary be asking questions based on the
appeal of my topic and the angle that I am taking. I received both qualitative and
quantitative results as I asked both closed and open questions.
 Secondary Research – my secondary research was me collecting facts and figures for my
idea’s using the internet. I devised 5 key questions which I answered in depth using the
internet, the questions was like an set out of what content was going to be in may
documentary. I found statistics (quantitative) which I could use for my documentary when
introducing what gospel music is and the history of it.
 Key findings – I found out that in order for my to do an documentary about gospel music I
would have to do an introduction of it in the beginning as many people did not know about
from research.
-I found out that my sources need to diverse to show more truth and reliability
to my audience watching.
-from my focus group people of different ethics than black who did not know
nothing about gospel music was still interested in watching an documentary on gospel music
within the UK for more knowledge.
 The research has advanced the development of my research by me knowing what I would
have in my documentary, I was able to choose the idea which I felt would have to most
potential to be film with ease, which have the most interesting range of contacts. My
research has helped me to have my content in an structured order, it has given me a clear
idea what is going in it and how it would be styled, with the help from my focus group.
Technical Viability
 The equipment that I will need during my production is an camera,
tripod, tape, dolly and a rod microphone.
 I will need time on a Mac using Imovie software for editing during
my post production.
 Crew members would be me and one of my classmates to help me
with filming. The cast would be the presenter (my sister), the
interviewees (Victizzle, TP and Deborah) also including vox pops
(people from the general public.
 Some audio which I may intend on having on the film may need
permission from artists, but this can done by writing a short
letter to inform them.
 I think it would be easy and accessible to execute in terms of
using the schools equipment and a time management and schedule
plan sorted to for this production.
Practical Viability
 In my feature I will have special guests such as an gospel clothing designer
Deborah.
 This contacts are already found from my contacts list I made already during
my research period.
 This will be filmed at the Makeup artist backstage when interview with
Deborah, in the recording studio when having an interview with TP and filmed
backstage after Victizzle performance.
 I have access to these locations I can easily get there by bus or train as it is
all London based my sources will also be able to get there.
 The props and costumes that I will be needing is outfits for the presenter.
 I may use archive footage for when introducing what gospel music is, will need
to ask permission to use the archive footage and images from the owner.
Legal & Regulatory Considerations
 BBC editorial guidelines- I will made sure that my facts and any
information is check to be accurate and truthful. My sources
also range from an gospel artist, to an music producer to and
gospel artist, which shows how diverse and fair it is for my
topic.
 Media Law-my source are able to but in my documentary as I will
be respecting their privacy. People will see a positive in the
gospel industry and may want to explore in their own interest.
Getting permission from sources to use their gospel music or
products within the production can allow the production to be
more communicative and entertaining.
 OFCOM’S Regulations- in my documentary will not show any
potential offensive material that can upset and harm other
people, children will also be able to watch my documentary. My
contributors will also be dealt with in an fair manner and
portrayed the way their would be expected to seem as.
Commercial Viability
 The market- there are no similar texts on the market that are similar to mine or compete with
mine, this is one of reasons why documentary is already unique. However my documentary can
share similar audience with channel 4 documentary viewers as the audience is would not
normally watch it topics would find it interesting to watch as its something that do not know.
 My budget- my feature will not cost much to produce as most equipment and things needed
would be already provided for me for free by the school. Only costs I see being made is
refreshment for cast and crew and maybe travel which should be free. I would need phone
credit to call my contacts to locate them or make arrangements when meeting up with them.
 Distribution and Exhibition-my documentary would be entertaining (with the music and clips of
performances), informing (tell them where there can go to buy products and listen to music)
and educating (give statistics and facts of gospel), so it can meet the public’s interest in this
three aspect and the BBC ethos. It will be shown on a weekday at 9pm, as that the times my
target audience would be at home watching TV. Not on a weekend as they are likely to be out
having fun. On channel 4 on Wednesdays at 9pm the documentary The Family is shown at the
time, where the majority of my audience would watch this documentary as it appeals to them
as it has humour. So my documentary would be shown at 9pm but not on Wednesday probably
Tuesday or Thursday so it does not loose most of its viewers.
