HIGHER EDUCATION IN UK
Some stadistics and numeric facts:
1.8 million students who have succesfuly
completed an A-Level, are currently studying in the
higher education.

Approximately a third of Young people go at the


age of 18 to higher education.

50% are Scottish

FEES AND FUNDING


- Students have to pay a contribution to the cost of teaching and their
living costs.
- The goverment provides loans to help them, which the students have to
pay back once their income reaches a certain level.
- The universities recieve money from the state for each student and they
are responsible for employing staff and deciding which course to offer.
- The head of the university, who is responsible for its management, is
called a Vice-Chancellor.

Education in UK is provided in the following institutions:
- Universities
- Polytechnics
- College

UNIVERSITIES
- There are about 50 universities in UK:
- 8 are in Scotland
- 2 are in Northern Ireland
- 1 in Wales
- The rest are in England.

- These institutions have great autonomy, and are supported by the University Grants Committee.

POLYTECHNICS
- Specialized in applied science for comercial and industrial sectors.
- Created to extend higher education in order to respond economically to the
social and economics needs.
- They offer courses full or part time, all geared to get the professional field.

The Committee of Polytechnics does the same work as the Vice-Chancellors in the
universities.

COLLEGES
- They arent universities.
- Other names: College of higher education, College of arts, Agriculture Colleges, etc.
- They consist of nature centers ans extensive options.

- Higher education in the United States is an optional final stage of
formal learning following secondary education.
- There are about 4,495 colleges or universities and junior colleges
in the country.

- The U.S. ranks 10th among industrial countries for percentage of


adults with college degrees.

TYPES OF U.S. HIGHER


EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
Community College
- These 2-year institutions, also known as technical or junior colleges,
award associate degrees upon completion of a 2-year program of
study.
- An associate degree enables students to:
- Transfer to a 4-year college or university to obtain a bachelors
degree, usually after 2 additional years of study.
- Begin a career immediately in any one of hundreds of fields that
do not require a 4-year degree.

Four-Year Colleges and Universities
- Four-year colleges and universities award bachelors degrees of
arts or science (BA or BS) and also may award graduate and
professional degrees. Credits earned at community colleges are
accepted for transfer into almost all 4-year college and university
bachelors degree programs.

Higher education usually follows the US education model.
- Completion of an academic or technical upper-secondary program (bachillerato or profesional
tcnico) is ordinarily required for admission to tertiary level institutions.
- Since 1994, higher secondary exit examinations designed by CENEVAL have been used
increasingly for the admissions process to higher education.
- According to government data, there were more than 2,500 institutions of higher education in
Mexico.

- Subsistema de Universidades Pblicas (Public University Subsystem): includes 61 federal and state universities,
many of which have been awarded the status of autonomous.
- Subsistema de Educacin Tecnolgica (Technological Education Subsystem): Research-based science and
technology institutions comprising 39 polytechnic universities and 218 technological institutes offering university
degrees in engineering and applied sciences.
- Subsistema de Universidades Tecnolgicas (Technological University Subsystem): 61 institutions administered by
state authorities.
- Subsistema de Educacin Normal (Teacher Training Subsystem)
- Subsistema de Otras Instituciones Pblicas (Other Public Institutions Subsystem): 116 other specialized
institutions of higher education including the Instituto de Antropologa e Historia
- Subsistema de Instituciones Particulares (Private Institution Subsystem): Nearly 2,000 private higher education
institutions whose programs of study are supervised by either federal or state ministries
