 The ILO headquarter is in GENEVA


 The ILO was founded in 1990 as a part
of Treaty of Versailles after world
war I
 ILO was created to reflect the belief
that universal and lasting peace can
be accomplished only if it is based
on social justice

more numerous and exploited with no
consideration for their health, Their
family lives and their advancement,
was less and less acceptable

condition, the workers, whose numbers

cost of production, anyindustry or
country adopting social reform would
find itself at a disadvantage vis-à-vis its

Objective

Constitution

 The constitution of ILO was


drafted between January
and April 1919 by the
Labour Commission set up
by peace conference

 This commission was


composed of nine countries
and Chairman was Samuel
Gompers head of AFL
 In October 1919 first international
Labour conference was held in
Washington and six international
Labour convention were adopted

 They were hours of work in industry


unemployment, maternity
protection, night work for women ,
minimum age and night work for
person in industry

 Currently ILO has 183 member STATE


 India since 28.06.1919

How ILO works

 The ILO has tripartite structure


 Three main bodies i.e. comprise govt.
Employer and Worker Representative
through which ILO accomplishes its
work
 In Geneva every year in June member state
of ILO meet at international Labour
conference
 Each member country has right to send 4
delegates
 Two govt. delegates, an employer
delegates and a worker delegate
Governing body

 The conference is a forum for


discussion of key social and Labour
problems and also elect the
Governing Body
 Governing of 28 government
members,14 employer members, 14
worker member
 Takes decision on ILO POLICY and
establish program and budget and
submits to conference for adoption
 Elects the director General
Redefining the
purpose

 In 1944 international labour


conference meet in Philadelphia,
USA redefined the aims and
purpose of ILO by adopting following
principles
 Labour is not a commodity
 Freedom of expression and of
association are essential to
sustained progress
 Poverty any where constitue a danger
to poverty every where

 Equal remuneration conventions


 Minimum age conventions
 Discrimination convention
 Worst forms of child labour
Child Labour

 As many 250 million children world


wide are thought to be working
deprived of adequate education
good health and basic freedom
 To abolish Child Labour ILO has
adopted WORST FORM OF CHILD
LABOUR CONVENTION
 An immediate measure to eliminate the
worst form of child labour to use any
child in any activity which harms the
health saftey or moral of child

IPECprogramme

 The International Programme on the


Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC)
currently manages over 1,000
programmes worldwide promoting
alternatives to child labor.

 Gender equality is the key element of


the ILO agenda of “DECENT WORK
FOR ALL “
 THE ILO has committed to an
integrated policy on women and
work involves 2 programmes
 The international Programme on more
and better jobs for women
 The Capacity-building Programme on

 On 3rd dec,2009 The International


Institute for Labour Studies of the
International Labour Office (ILO) is
to launch a new study, entitled
“World of Work Report 2009
 On same day Kuwait gives US$
1,000,000 to the ILO in support of its
work to promote decent work in
Arab States

 The ILO secretariat, operational


headquarters, research centre and
publishing house, are based in the
International Lab our Office,
Geneva.
 Administration and management are
decentralized in regional, area, and
branch offices in more than 40
countries.
