INTRODUCTION

NRAM stands for Nano-RAM.
Nano-RAM is a proprietary computer memory
technology from the company Nantero.
It is a type of nonvolatile random access memory
based on the position of carbon nanotubes
deposited on a chip-like substrate.
It is also called Nanotube-based RAM.
In theory, the small size of the nanotubes allows
for very high density memories.
HISTOry
Nano-RAM is being developed by the Japan based
company Nantero.
Dr. Thomas Rueckes, Nantero's Chief Technology
Officer, uses carbon nanotubes as the active
memory elements of NRAM.
Dr. Rueckes uses nanotubes great conductivity to
create clusters of cells to form NRAM chips.

TECHNOLOGY
Nantero's technology is based on a well-known
effect in carbon nanotubes.
In Nantero's technology, each NRAM "cell"
consists of a number of nanotubes suspended on
insulating "lands" over a metal electrode.
A small dot of gold is deposited on top of the
nanotubes on one of the lands, providing an
electrical connection, terminal.
A second electrode lies below the surface.
Carbon nanotubes
Carbon nanotubes are
the strongest stiffest
materials on earth.
Nanotubes can have an
electrical current
density more then 1,000
times greater than
metals such as silver
and copper.
Nanotube based
transistors have been
made that operate at
room temperature and
that are capable of
digital switching using a
single electron.

Properties

Members of the fullerene family.
100,000 times smaller than a human hair.
Conductor of Electricity comparable to Copper.
Stronger than Steel.
Hard as a Diamond.

STRUCTURE
OF
STORAGE
Applied charge make CNT ribbons bend down to
touch the substrate or bend up back to its original
state.
Ribbon-up gives 'zero' and ribbon-down is 'one'.
Advantages
NRAM chips can be much smaller that todays DRAM chips.
NRAM is non-volatile.
NRAM, unlike Flash RAM, can read/write with much less
power.
failure will not corrupt data
NRAM can not be erased with magnets, radiation, even
power.
Speed
Storage Capacity
Compatibility.
Energy Conserver.
Unaffected by Environmental Forces .

APPLICATIONS
Computer and Laptops (Enabling instant on
performance, with instant boot up).
Mobile devices (Faster storage of more data for
PDAs and handhelds).
Embedded memory (More powerful & faster
microprocessor, microcontroller, other logic
device can be built).
High speed network server.
Faster and denser memory storages.(e.g.. hard
disk).
