History
Named after King Phillip II of Spain; was a Spanish colony
for over 300 years
Archipelago of 7,000 islands; Manila (capitol) established in
1571
1762 Britain captured Manila for two years before handing it
back under the Treaty of Paris
1898 America defeats the Spanish and Filipino-American
War continues to 1902
1941 Japan captures Manila, however, America recaptures
and gains control of the Philippines in 1945.
The Philippines becomes independent on July 4, 1946.
