MODERN OLYMPIC GAMES

ANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES
It was stated in Olympia Valley in 776 B.C.
It is believed to be started by Hercules, the son of Zeus started these games.
These continued for thousand years.
In 394 A.D., Thoedosius, the King of Rome stopped the organisation of ancient Olympic
Games.
There were many games played like 400 yard walking, three miles race, pentathlon,
boxing, horse racing etc.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France decided to create the modern Olympics.
For organisation of Olympic Games, Coubertin conducted two important meetings
of various countries in 1893 and 1894 respectively
It was presided by Coubertin that Olympic Games should held after every forth
year on the lines of Greek Olympic Games and every nation should be invited to
participate.
Most of the sports on the programme of the ancient Olympic Games were echoed in
the modern Games.
The first Modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896








MODERN OLYMPIC GAMES - ORIGIN
SYMBOLS FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES
Olympic Flag was created in 1913 at
the suggestion of Coubertin.

It was inaugurated in Paris in 1914.

It was hoisted in 1920

It was made of white silk and contains
5 interlocking rings in 5 colours
representing the 5 continents

The interlocking of rings symbolises
cooperation and friendship.

THE FLAME
It is a symbol of knowledge, life,
happiness and peace.

This flame or torch is lighted and is
carried by runners to the place where
Olympic Games are going to be
organised.

During this process it keeps burning.

At the end of closing ceremony of
these games this flame is
extinguished.

It weights 1.2 kg.
OLYMPIC MOTTO
The Olympic motto is made up of three Latin
words :

OLYMPIC AWARDS OLYMPIC IDEALS
The first, second and third position
holders are awarded with gold, silver
and bronze medals and a certificate.

The next five position holders are
awarded with certificates.

The important thing in Olympic is not

OLYMPIC OATH
During the opening of Olympic Games, oath taking ceremony is held by the athletes
who get assembled in the sports stadium.

The representative takes oath on their behalf and all the athletes raise their right arm
and repeat the oath after him:


We swear that we will take part in the Olympic Games in loyal competition,
respecting the regulations which govern them and desirous of participating in them
in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the honour of our country and for the glory of
sports

RULES FOR COMPETITORS
Any male and female can participate in Olympic Games.


No sportsperson can participate in these games without the
approval as well as recommendation of National Olympic
Committee.
ABOUT INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC
COMMITTEE(IOC)
IOC is the governing body of Olympic Games.

Committed to support and promote participation in sports.

Headquarters is located in Switzerland.

Created by Coubertin in 1894.

Greek Demitrios Vikelas was its first president.

Its membership consists of 105 active members and 32 honorary members.

IOC organises Summer and Winter Olympic Games.


MEMBERS OF IOC
PRESIDENT

President of IOC is elected by its members.

He is elected for eight years.

He can be re-elected after expiry of his term.

The current president is Thomas Bach.

The previous president was Jacques Rogge.



VISE-PRESIDENT
Four vise-presidents are elected.

Elected by members of the committee.

Elected for a the term of four years.

They can be re-appointed if members of committee want to.

EXECUTIVE BOARD
It consists of President, Vice-presidents, and ten other members.

It is elected by the IOC session in the secret ballot, by voting.

The administration of IOC and the management of its affairs are the responsibilities of
the executive board.
FUNCTIONS OF IOC
Venue and Timings of Olympic Games is decided by IOC.

Rules and Regulations are made by IOC.

Ensures regular celebration of Olympic Games.

Takes action to strengthen the unity and protect the independence of Olympic
Movement.

Acts against discrimination affecting Olympic Movement.

Opposes the political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes.

OPENING CEREMONY OF OLYMPIC GAMES
Olympic torch or flame is burnt through sunrays in Olympic village(Greece) and it
is brought to that city where the Olympic games are going to be held.

All the sportspersons take part in march past and they take oath.

The president or prime minister declares the games open in the stadium.

Recreational and cultural programmes are organised.

Olympic flag is hoisted and Olympic flame of the stadium is kindled by the torch.

MEDAL PRESENTATION
After each Olympic event is completed, a medal ceremony is held.
A threetiered rostrum is used for the three medal winners, with the gold
medal winner ascending to the highest platform.
The medals are awarded by a member of the IOC.
The IOC member is usually accompanied by a person from sports
federation governing the sport, who presents each athlete with a small
bouquet of flowers.
After medals are distributed, the flags of the nations of the three medalists
are raised.
The flags are raised while the national anthem of the gold medalist's
country plays
Citizens of the host country also act as hosts during the medal ceremonies.
They aid the officials who present the medals and act as flag bearers.
Strict rules govern the conduct of athletes during the medal ceremony.
They are not allowed to display any political affiliation or make a political
statement while on the medal stand.
CLOSING CEREMONY OF OLYMPIC GAMES
Sportspersons from all the countries get assembled in the stadium for closing
ceremony.

The mayor of that city and the president of the managing committee lead the
president of IOC to the stadium.

The IOC president then makes a speech before closing the Olympics Games.

Olympic flag is lowered and is given to the mayor of the city.

Various cultural programmes are organised.

The Olympic flame is extinguished.

The games come to an end with Olympic song.
OBJECTIVES OF OLYMPICS
To pay attention towards physical education and sports competitions in all the countries.

To develop personality, character, citizenship qualities and health among youths.

Formation of good habits among sportspersons so that they lead a healthy and
prosperous life.

To develop patriotism and fraternity among sportspersons.

Not to have any discrimination on the basis of caste, race and religion.
DEVELOPMENT OF VALUES
FRIENDSHIP SOLIDARITY
When Olympic Games are held, the
participants get close to one another.

They become friends.

The nations, who have tense relations,
also come near to one another.
It gives a feeling a feeling of
brotherhood and unity among various
nations.

It creates cohesion among the
participants as nations.
FAIR PLAY
FREE FROM DISCRIMINATION
There should be justice to each player
as well as team.

There should not be any favour or
inclination towards a team.

Rules and regulations must be applied
fairly to each team.
There should be no discrimination on
the basis of caste, race and religion.

In Olympics, there is no meaning of
caste, race, religion or community.

ADVANTAGES OF OLYMPIC GAMES
A likelihood of making a profit through sponsorship, media rights and
marketing/merchandise.

The provision of updated or new facilities that can be used again later.

Raising the profile and reputation of the hosts in the eyes of the rest of the world.

NEGATIVE ASPECT OF OLYMPIC GAMES
Tough there are many advantages of Olympic Games, both to nations and to
sportsperson, there are also many disadvantages of Olympic Games like:

Some countries take part in Olympic Games just to prove their supremacy over
others.

E.g.- It was a shock to see these values when some countries boycotted 1980
Moscow Olympics and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Security risk and the threat of a terrorist attack.

Boycotts and protests for political reasons.

High costs and expenses to provide facilities and security.
