1.Introduction

Statistics reveal that every minute a human is losing his/her life
across the globe. More close in India, everyday many lives are
affected by heart attacks and more importantly because the patients
did not get timely and proper help .

Care of critically ill patient, requires spontaneous & accurate
decisions so that life-protecting & lifesaving therapy can be
properly applied

This Project is based on monitoring of patients. We have designed
and developed a reliable, energy efficient patient monitoring
system.

It is able to send parameters of patient in real time. It enables the
doctors to monitor patients health parameters (temp, heartbeat,
ECG, position) in real time. Here the parameters of patient are
measured continuously (temp, heartbeat, ECG) and wirelessly
transmitted using Zigbee.

If a particular patients health parameter falls below the threshold
value, an automated SMS is sent to the pre-configured Doctors
mobile number using a standard GSM module interfacedto the
microcontroller.

Here, we are using Zigbee for wireless transmission. The Doctor
can get arecord of a particular patients information by just
accessing the database of thepatient on his PC which is
continuously updated through Zigbee receiver module.

2.Background Theory &
Motivation
In a hospital either the nurse or the doctor has to move
physically from one person to another for health check,
which may not be possible to monitor their conditions
continuously.

Thus any critical situations cannot be found easily unless
the nurse or doctor checks the persons health at that
moment. This may be a strain for the doctors who have to
take care of a lot number of people in the hospital.

In order to keep in track of critical health conditions, a real
time health monitoring system of patient based on ZigBee
and GSM is designed and developed in this project

3.Objective & Scope

The project GSM and Zigbee based embedded
solution for Continuous remote monitoring and
alerting cardiac patients using a microcontroller
deals with the measurement of heart rate and body
temperature and it are be transmitted to a remote
server using GSM and ZIGBEE to avoid heart
failure as per commands provided by the micro
controller.

In Future we may include more number of sensors in
a single system to provide flexibility.

4.Details of Literature Survey
Conducted/to be conducted

1.Primarily looking at the existing status of research in remote monitoring,
major impetus is only for development of system applications in industrial
automation, home automation, health care systems and defense.
2. With explosive growth of cellular networks in India and sharp reduction
in cost of handsets and call charges with coverage of >70% of area, cell
phones offer unique opportunity for remote control even in rural area.
3. The research work presented in this thesis is aimed to remotely monitor
the system using cell phone by designing and implementing embedded
system.
4. It is aimed to provide facility to use even any obsolete mobile model
having simple messaging and calling function to make remote system
affordable to all categories of users.
5. The major aspect of the research had been to work out strategies to keep
operational cost of the system minimum to emphasize its utility to automate
simple systems with remote monitoring capabilities.

Abstract
Continuous monitoring and analysis of vital parameters like SO2, heart
frequency,
breathing frequency is important for the prevention and management of
cardiac heart failure. The cardiac sentinel allows continuous monitoring and
recording of these parameters and automatic transmission of the collected
data to the clinical server via an inbuilt GSM modem.

4.Experimental work Details

Problem statement
The present patient monitor systems in hospitals allow continuous
monitoring of patient vital signs, which require the sensors to be
hardwired to nearby, bedside monitors or PCs, and essentially
confine the patient to his hospital bed. Even after connecting these
systems to a particular patient, a paramedical assistant need to
continuously monitor and note down all the vital parameters of a
given patient by keeping track of all of his/her records manually.
Adopting such a method is error prone and may lead to disaster in
the case of a human error.
Proposed solution
In the proposed system, patients parameters such as ECG,
Temperature and Heart Beat will be continuously transmitted and
monitored through wireless technology Zigbee . This system does
not require the patient to be confined to his bed and allows him to
move around freely in his room within a specific distance from the
doctors monitor.

5. Block diagram of the
project
Temperature sensor
LM35 series are precision integration-circuit
temperature sensors whose output voltage is
linearly proportional to the Celsius temperature.

It is a three terminal IC that directly gives analog
output. This unit requires +5VDC for it proper
operation.

The LM35 is rated to operate over a 55C to
+150C temperature range.
Heart beat sensor
Principle
Heart beat sensor is designed to give digital output of heat beat when
a finger is placed inside it. This digital output can be connected to
microcontroller directly to measure the Beats per Minute (BPM) rate.
It works on the principle of light modulation by blood flow through
finger each pulse. The sensor consists of a super bright red LED and
light detector. The LED needs to be super bright as the maximum light
must pass spread in finger and detected by detector. Now, when the
heart pumps a pulse of blood through the blood vessels, the finger
becomes slightly more opaque and so less light reached the detector.
With each heart pulse the detector signal varies. This variation is
converted to electrical pulse

Heart beat sensor
Zigbee module

ZigBee technology is a low data rate, low power
consumption, low cost, wireless networking
protocol targeted towards automation and remote
control applications.

ZigBee is expected to provide low cost and low
power connectivity for equipment that needs
battery life as long as several months to several
years but does not require data transfer rates as
high as those enabled by Bluetooth.

ZigBee compliant wireless devices are
expected to transmit 10-75 meters,
depending on the RF environment and the
power output consumption required for a
given application

GSM Technology
GSM stands for Global System for Mobile
Communication and is an open, digital cellular
technology used for transmitting mobile voice and
data services.

The GSM emerged from the idea of cell-based
mobile radio systems at Bell Laboratories in the
early 1970s.

The GSM is the name of a standardization
group established in 1982 to create a
common European mobile telephone
standard.
The GSM was developed using digital
technology. It has an ability to carry 64 kbps
to 120 Mbps of data rates.
Presently GSM support more than one
billion mobile subscribers in more than 210
countries throughout of the world.

6.Results & Discussions
This system is based upon wireless technology i.e.
Zigbee IEEE 801.15.4 providing low cost effective
solution. As it is wireless device, the cost of cables is
reduced here.
It provides continuous monitoring of the vital signs of
the patient over long periods of time until an abnormal
condition is captured and hence critical situations can be
overcome.
This intelligent monitoring system provides long term
monitoring capability useful for the staff in the hospitals
and reduces their workload.

Conclusion

From this project we can conclude that we are
able to transmit the data which is sensed from
remote patient to the doctors PC by using
wireless transmission technology, Zigbee.

Using Zigbee at receiver the data is received and
displayed on the PC. Also, if doctor is not present
in campus, he will receive a SMS on his mobile
phone in case any of the parameter goes beyond
the normal range.
