TIME STUDY

WORK MEASUREMENT
It is a technique of work study

Work measurement is defined as the
application of techniques designed to
establish the work content of a
specified task by determining the time
required for carrying out the task at a
defined standard of performance by a
qualified worker

Techniques of work
measurement are
Time study
Synthesis method
Analytical estimating
Predetermined motion time system
Work sampling
TIME STUDY
It is a technique of work measurement,
used for determining the measurement
possible from a limited number of
observations, the time to carry out a given
activity at a defined standard of
performance
Time study is used when the work is
repetitive
Sampling process
To determine the time required for the
performance of the subsequent cycles by
the worker
The job selected for time study is split into
activities.
Objectives
Main objective:-
To determine by direct observation,
the quantity of human work in a specified
task and hence to establish the standard
time ,within an average worker work at
normal place should complete the task
using a specified method.
Other objectives are:-
To form a basis comparison for
determining operating effectiveness
To set labour standard for satisfactory
performance.
To compare alternative methods in
method study in order to select the best
method
To determine the standard cost.
To determine equipment and labour
requirements.
Contd
To determine the basic time
To determine the number of machines an
operator can handle
To balance the work of operators in
production or assembly lines
To provide a basis for setting piece rate or
incentive wages
To set the completion schedules for
individual operations or job
To determine the cycle time for completion
of a job
Steps involved in time study are:-
Select the job to be studied
Select the worker to be studied
Conducting stop watch time study

Elements involved in a job are:-
Repetitive element
Occasional element
Constant element
Variable element
Manual element
Machine element
Governing element
Foreign element

PRINCIPLES
Each activity should be of short duration,
but at the same time long enough for it to
be timed with a stop watch.
The activities of the operator and activities
of the machinery should be distinguished.
Delays of the operator and the equipment
should also be indicated separately
NORMAL TIME IS ESTIMATED AS

Normal Time(NT) =
Observed performance time per unit X
performance rating
OR
NT= Time worked X Performance rating
No of units produced
