A hub of arts and artistic activities and the place where classical arts and folk
arts come together, Jawahar Kala Kendra was established in 1983.
It truly showcases the rich heritage and tradition of Jaipur in its true essence
. The center hosts a plethora of plays like Rangayan, Krishnayan, Kadva Sach,
Shastra Dekho Shastra, I will not Cry and Open Theatre (fictional and
mythological plays).
JKK is the brainchild of the Rajasthan Government for preserving Rajasthani
arts and crafts.
It was built by the Rajasthan govt.
With the purpose of preserving
Rajasthani arts & craft.

For instants hastkaar yantra which is
displaced in art gallery based on
medieval Rajasthani painting

Ceiling of entrance foyer is displayed
at jawahar kala kendra
It houses a museum, a library, a
cafeteria, an art-studio, a small
hostel, art display rooms, art-
studios, one amphi theatre as well as
a closed auditorium.
You will also enjoy visiting the art
galleries that are a part of Jawahar
Kala Kendra.
The art gallery houses impeccable
collection of paintings, artifacts and
local handicrafts.
The cafeteria at JKK is known for it's
excellent coffee and dosa, do try to
make time for some.
The place is best visited when there
is an ongoing presentation. You can
also pick up local handicrafts here at
economical prices; the painting
folders sold here are excellent.

The centre is an analogue of the original city pIan of Jaipur drawn up by the
Maharaja, a scholar, mathematician and astronomer, Jai Singh the Second, in the mid-
17th century. His city plan, guided by the Shipla Shastras, was based on the ancient
Vedic mandala of nine squares or houses which represent the nine planets (including
two imaginary ones Ketu and Rahu). Due to the presence of a hill one of the squares
was transposed to the east and two of the squares were amalgamated to house the
palace.

Each square was linked to the
planet as per the characteristics of
the particular planet and its
astrological values and the
functionality of the square.
This Navgrah concept with its
energy values their favorable
colour, quality and the favourable
functionality to the each planet with
square kept in mind while
designing and allocation of spaces.
Partly open courtyards and the
traditional design elements of
Rajasthan have been incorporated
in the complex.
Correa's plan for the Kendra invokes directly the
original navagraha or nine house rnandala. One of the
squares is pivoted to recall the original city plan and also to
create the entrance. The plan of Jaipur city based on the
nine square Yantra in which one square is displaced and
two central squares combined. the squares is defined by 8m
high wall, symbolic of the fortification wall along the Jaipur
old city
circulation and vehicular
movement
jawahar kala kendra lies on
the park avenue road.
entrance of the site faces the
primary road followed by a
service
all the tourists have to enter
the service lane for parking
their cars and to enter the
jawahar kala kendra.
there is no specific route for
the pedestrian.
there are two gates to enter the
site.
first gate is only for the
tourists and the second gate is
for the exhibitors and the staff
working there.
there cars are parked inside
the site on the back side where
there is an office.
this is the service lane which is
used to park the private cars. the
road would be possibly 6m wide.
we can see the two wheelers and
also the cars parked over here.
infact they are using a part of the
main road also to park the cars.
service road finishes at 30 m of
the main gate of the kala kendra
exactly in front of the second
gate for the staff members.
Therefore,there is direct entry for
the staff members through the
park avenue road and does not
need to enter the service lane.
so the visitors can directly drop
themselves in front of the gate.

parking
it is said parking is one of the most
important factor to attract the tourists.
if we talk about jawahar kala kenda, its an
issue to park our cars.
actually there is no specific parking
alloted to this site so service adjacent to
the site is in use
vehicles of other government
employees,visitors and media would be
parked at the service lane adjacent to
Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) and the NCC
Centre.
The remaining vehicles associated with
government duties can be parked at the
office of the Additional DCP (East)
Jaipur and Jhalana Road which is on the
opposite road of the JKK.

the available area for the parking
isn't sufficient not more than 50
cars can be parked in the service
lane adjacent to the site.
so the parking of NCC post office
which is about 1 km away from the
site is used.
large parking space is available
there and is used by the visitors of
kala kendra too
there are few more landmarks
whose parking is also shared by the
JKK. for instance university
commerce college which is not
more than 1km from the site.
service lane adjacent to the college
is also used for the public
transport.eg,:3 wheelers

in case of the public transport, there is a bus stand in service lane adjacent to
the JKK which is about 10 m away from the site.
people prefer visiting there through a public transport only like buses and 3
wheelers.

in case of offsite parking, residential parking(telecom colony) which is about
0.64kmaway from the site is also used creating an inconvinience to the people
residing there.

The centre is frequently occupied with
artists and arts loving people.
Many exhibition and performances by
local artists are displayed at Jawahar
kala Centre.
The annual festivals of classical
dance and music are held in the centre.
Many workshops connected with
music and dance are also held
here.There is an area called
Shilpgram in this museum where you
can find the different types of huts found
in Rajasthan.
Sandarbh i.e Library
The whole complex in itself has a unique design & concept in the
architectural industry, the concept of nine squares as Navgrah.
Each square was linked to the planet as per the characteristics of
the particular planet and its astrological values and the functionality
of the square.
This particular square was linked with Jupiter the characteristics
were matched in such a way
Linked planet Jupiter
Favorable colour lemon yellow
Quality of the planet Knowledge
Functionality allotted Library
Favorable colour
As and when the square was representing the planet Jupiter
the astrological value was kept in consideration. The favorable
colour of this planet was lemon yellow so the square was
treated with yellow colour in the external finishing and the water
body was added in the partially open area to make the
environment more lively.
Part plan of library
Library view with full glazing
Library view showing
the Pond area and
pergola
Play with light and shadow

The second most significant feature which was been
adopted in this particular square was the spectacular play
with the light and the shadow. As the the square was
partially open to sky and the particular side had the full
height glazing in it the partial open roof was treated with
the architectural feature pergolas.
The cut out was designed in such a way that the corridor
will alwayz remain in shade and has the pond in corner
which would reduce the effect of the harsh sun to the
library.

Use of local
material

The spanning between
beams was designed
and kept such that the
local material available
like wooden bamboo
sticks could be used to
complete the entire
space frame.
Central core open air theatre
The stepping and the
walls were cladded
with red sandstone the
locally available
material the theater
was opening into the
library , Vehicular
entrance ,gallery and
workshop as shown.

Madhyavarti i.e Open air theatre
The theatre was located and placed so well in
layout and planned that the rest of 8 square
were well connected to the central open
theatre and the best part of it were the
stepped platforms which could be used as
seating areas. The same were surrounded by
the 8m high walls and the design stepping
was incorporated in the corners of two walls to
make them more interacted to each other.
Tilam food court

The food court has been the excellent
example of the traditional rural
architecture of Rajasthan. The structure
has been made in brick masonary then
later finished with the mud and the roof
has been framed in MS circular pipes
and then covered with fibre sheet both
framework in MS and fibre sheet have
been finished with the local putty to give
it a rural effect.
The art work on
walls, planning
and the sitting
arrangement
on floor
baithak was
designed to set
an excellent
example of our
rural and
cultural eithics
in India
Traditional art work
Today, when we are running so fast after
the western culture and traditions
somewhere we have lost the significance
of our own traditions and culture and
such ideas may give some headway to
make the future generations atleast to
know their past culture and living.
