EARLY LIFE
 Was born 6 years after the birth of
the Holy Prophet.
 Father’s name was Affan and
Mother’s name was Arwa.
 Belonged to the Omayya branch
(national flag keepers of Quraish).
 Was a rich Cloth Merchant.
 Looked upon wealth as a means of
helping others.
ACCEPTANCE OF ISLAM
 Abu Bakr was the person who won
Usman for Islam.
 He was one of the first Muslims.
 The Holy Prophet gave to him his
daughter Ruqayya in marriage.
 The Quraish and his relatives became
his enemies after accepting Islam.
 Was granted permission to go to
Abyssinia.
CLOSENESS TO THE
PROPHET
 Was among those who were very close
to the Prophet.
 Fought in all the battles except Badr
due to illness of his wife.
 After the death of Ruqayya, the Holy
Prophet married him to his second
daughter Umm Kulthum.
 Earned the title of “ZUN-NOORAIN”
meaning “the possessor of two lights”.
CLOSENESS TO THE
PROPHET
 Played an important role in the peace
talks of Hudaibiya.
 When the Muslims were facing
difficulty in getting drinking water,
the Holy Prophet asked:
“ who will buy the well for the Muslims?
ALLAH will reward him a fountain in
Paradise.”
 Usman at once responded.
CLOSENESS TO THE
PROPHET
 He bought the well for 20,000 Dinars
and gave it to the Muslims.
 He also bought land for the
expansion of the Holy Prophet’s
Mosque.
 He also donated 1,000 Camels, 50
Horses, 1,000 pieces of Gold for the
preparation a battle.
CLOSENESS TO THE
PROPHET
 Usman was one of the scribes of the
Holy Prophet.
 He was one of the men who wrote
the portions of the Quran as they
were revealed.
 He was also one of the companions
whom the Holy Prophet gave good
tidings of “HEAVEN”.
ELECTION
 Umar had nominated a 6 man council to
choose a Caliph from among them.
 These members were:
Hazrath Ali
Hazrath Usman
Abdur Rehman Bin Auf
Saad Bin Abi Waqaas
Zubair Bin Awwam
Talha Bin Obaidullah
ELECTION
 The electors were to meet and decide the
Caliph after Umar’s death.
 The members did not come to a decision.
 Abdul Rehman said:
“ if any man is willing to withdraw his name,
he will have the right to nominate the Caliph.
Who will withdraw?”
 All kept silent.
ELECTION
 Abdul Rehman said:
“ I withdraw my name.”
 Abdul Rehman went to each tribe for
their suggestion.
 The Banu Hashim were for Ali and all
others were for Usman.
 Abdul Rehman talked to the two
candidates.
ELECTION
 Alisuggested Usman.
 Usman suggested Ali.
 Abdul Rehman decided to make
Usman as the Caliph.
 Hence Usman became the Third
Caliph of Islam.
FIRST ADDRESS
 The weight of the new responsibility
made Usman’s body shake.
 All he could say was:
“ O people, it is not easy to manage a
new horse. There will be several
occasions to speak to you. If I live, I
will address you some other day. But you
know, I am not very good at speech-
making.”
CALIPHATE
 Usman was the Caliph for about 12
years.
 He was generous and soft-hearted.
 But some people took undue
advantage of this thing.
 Despite internal troubles, Usman’s
Caliphate saw much expansion of the
empire.
CALIPHATE
 North Africa was occupied in 26 A.H.
 Cyprus was occupied in 28 A.H.
 In 31 A.H. the Byzantines were cripled
to death.
 Persia and Tabristan were also
occupied in 31 A.H.
