2
Whats your heart rate?
Average for a
male is 72
beats a
minute.

Average for a
female is 80.

3
What will make your heart
work harder?
Exercise
Stress
Eating
Caffeine or other stimulants

4
Circulatory System
Covers over 80,000 miles.

Blood circulates about 1,000
times a day.

Its made up of the heart and
the blood vessels.
5
The three blood vessels
are
Arteries-carry blood away from
the heart. They have strong
muscular walls. You can feel
your pulse at some arteries.
Veins-carry blood to the heart.
They are slick and smooth.
They have one way valves to
make sure blood only goes one
way.
Capillaries-connect arteries and
veins.
6
The Heart
The heart is about the size of
your fist.

It weighs less than a pound.
7
Most animal hearts are
good for about 1 billion
beats. Animals with slow
heart rates usually live
longer.
Shrews-1000x minute-about 1
years
Mice-500x minute-about 1-2 years
Rabbit-200x minute-about 6 years
Elephants-25x minute-about 60
years
Blue whales-5-6x minute (3x
when diving)-they can live over
100 years. Their hearts are the size
of a VW Beetle.
8
Human Hearts
Should be good
for 2.5 billion
beats.
If you can slow
your heart rate,
you have a good
chance of
spreading those
2.5 billion beats
over more years.
Exercise is one
of the best ways
to lower heart
rates.

Blood
Blood will go where it is
needed. To the muscles when
active-to the stomach after
eating.
The average person has 10
pints of blood.
When you donate blood, you
give a pint.
11
Functions of Blood
Carries food to cells
Carries away waste
Carries heat
Carries chemicals to fight
disease
Carries oxygen to cells
12
Blood is 55% plasma and
45% cells. The blood cells
are
Red-carry oxygen to the body.
Contain hemoglobin which
makes blood red.

White- fight infection.

Platelets-clot blood.

13
Transfusions and Blood
Types
First
transfusion
was in 1667.
Lambs blood
was used.
Blood types
were
discovered in
1900 by a
German
scientist, Karl
Landsteiner.

Type A-41%

Type B-10%

Type AB-4%

Type O-45%
14
RH Factor
In 1940, Landsteiner
discovered an additional factor
in blood. He named it the RH
factor after his experimental
Rhesus monkeys.
85% of the population is
positive.
15% of the population is
negative.
