Dialectics are inherent contradictions in all relationships; that is,
we cannot avoid them, as they are just part of life
(Oetzel, 2009, p.160)

Read the case study (on your own) and make notes.

Then work in groups to compare notes and identify issues in
intercultural communication terms.

Link each issue to relevant intercultural communication
theory and prepare a response to report back to the whole
class.

Prepare a group response under the following headings:

1. Key issues link to theory
2. Evaluate & compare alternative solutions practical terms
3. Recommend solution link to theory

Time: 2o minutes
Scope: Apply the knowledge learned to intercultural communication
in everyday life situations with a particular emphasis on ethnicity,
race, gender and national identity.
Task: (refer to assessment brief for full tasks)
1. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to demonstrate
your ability to research and critically analyse a significant
intercultural communication issue that has featured in New
Zealand news outlets (radio, television and internet sources)
during 2013. Ideally, the issue will have generated public
controversy and debate.

Group proposal due no later than Monday 1 September, 12 noon.

Assignment 2: Group Research Presentation
Proposal should include

list of members with job description of each (for assignment)

a description of the issue chosen

a statement why its significant in terms of intercultural
communication in Aotearoa/New Zealand

A list of relevant intercultural communication theories that
you intend to use to analyse the issue
