WATER PUMPING SYSTEM USING

WIND MILL
INTRODUCTION
Wind energy offers another source for pumping as well as
electric power generation. India has potential of over 20,000
MW for power generation and ranks as one of the promising
countries for tapping this source. The cost of power
generation from wind farms has now become lower than
diesel power and comparable to thermal power in several
areas of our country especially near the coasts.

How It Works

the water-pumping windmill is a simple machine that uses
mechanical advantage in multiple ways. Its a direct-drive
device that transfers energy via gears, rods, simple valves,
and a piston in a cylinderand uses high torque to move
water. In contrast, wind-electric turbines use electrical
generators coupled to high-tech airfoils that require high
speed to do their job.
How Wind Energy is Best Used As of today
wind energy is best fit to be used as an alternative source of
energy but as costs go down and effectiveness goes up this
could soon change, and wind energy may become a viable
option the leading source powering the future. Placement is
key in using wind farms and windmills, because if the money is
to be spent to create one, optimal effectiveness will need to
be assured.

How Wind Energy is Best Used
Wind power is a renewable energy source that has virtually
no disrupting effect on the environment With limitations
due to price and storage issues it is not a viable option as a
constant source of power Especially considering the fact that
practical wind machines only extract 5% to 45% of available
power depending on the efficiency of the turbine design We
are best served to use wind energy in harmony with other
forms of energy.
Why Windmills?
Wind pumps are wind driven machines for
pumping water.
Total independence from the Electricity Board
No electricity bills
No expenditure for diesel
Environmentally friendly
Wind pump maintenance

A comprehensive Maintenance Manual is provided with
each
wind pump
1.Windmill and tower
Minimal maintenance required
Greasing of all bearings (two times a year)
Checking for any loose bolts and nuts (two times a year)
2. Maintenance of pump, pump rods and delivery pipe
Depends on a number of factors
Quality or water is crucial (Sand in the water of saline
water)

How Pumping Systems Work

Wind energy can be used by both mechanical and electric water pumps.
The simplest systems involve mechanical water pumps. Thousands of
mechanical windmills, using positive displacement pumps, are still
installed annually, and they are often a cost effective method to provide
small quantities of water for livestock. Most new wind-powered
pumping systems use a small wind turbine to power a direct current
(DC) electric pump, either diaphragm or helical rotor.
What kinds of windmills are there?
Windmills generally consist of two types
Vertical-axis wind
turbines are efficient and can obtain power from wind blowing
in any direction
Horizontal axis devices must be oriented facing the wind to
extract power
How much water can a wind-powered
pump deliver?
The amount of water a wind-powered water pumping system
can deliver depends on the speed and duration of the wind,
the size and efficiency of the rotor, the efficiency of the pump
being used, and how far the water has to be lifted.
P DV =0 0109 2 3 .
P is power in watts
D is the rotor diameter in metres
V is the wind speed in kilometres per hour
is the
efficiency of the wind turbine

What is required to maintain a wind-powered
pumping system?

One of the attractions to wind-powered pumping systems is their simplicity
and robustness. It is prudent to check all rubber diaphragms annually, and,
on compressed-air models, to check all valves. The anchoring system for the
windmill tower should also be checked to ensure that the windmill is not
toppled during high winds. As with any pumping system, a wind-powered
pumping system should be checked regularly to ensure that cattle have an
adequate supply of water.

ADVANTAGES
The major advantage of this design is that the rotor blades can
accept the wind from any compass.
Another added advantage is that the machine can be mounted
on the ground eliminating tower structures and lifting of huge
weight of machine assembly, i.e. it can be operated close to the
ground level.
Airfoil rotor fabrication costs are expected to be reduced over
conventional rotor blade costs
DISADVANTAGES
Rotor power output efficiency of a Durries wind energy
conversion system is also somewhat lower than that of a
conventional horizontal rotor.

CONCLUSION
This technology would facilitate the future creation of new urban
landscapes, athletic fields with a spectator area, music halls, theaters,
nightclubs and a large gathering space for rallies, demonstrations and
celebrations, railway stations, bus stands, subways, airports etc. like
capable of harnessing human locomotion for electricity generation
