The Harvard Dictionary of Music

The Harvard Dictionary of Music includes entries on all the
styles and forms in Western music; comprehensive articles
on the music of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Near
East; descriptions of instruments enriched by historical
background; and articles that reflect today's beat,
including popular music, jazz, and rock.
Encyclopedia-length articles by notable experts alternate with
short entries for quick reference, including definitions and
identifications of works and instruments. More than 220
drawings and 250 musical examples enhance the text. This is
an invaluable book that no music lover can afford to be
without.

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians

It is an encyclopedic dictionary of music and musicians. Along
with the German-language Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart,
it is one of the largest reference works on Western music.
Originally published under the title A Dictionary of Music and
Musicians, and later as Grove's Dictionary of Music and
Musicians, it has gone through several editions since the 19th
century and is widely used. In recent years it has been made
available as an electronic resource called Grove Music Online,
which is now an important part of Oxford Music Online.
A Dictionary of Music and Musicians was first published in
four volumes (1879, 1880, 1883, 1889)
Whats interesting: In the mid-1990s, the set version, under a new
title - the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians was sold for
about $2,300. A paperback edition was reprinted in 1995 which sold
for $500. At that point, editors likely decided to concentrate on the
second edition rather than continue to correct the mistakes of the
first.
The second edition under this title (the seventh overall) was
published in 2001, in 29 volumes, 29,499 articles in total. It was also
made available by subscription on the internet in a service called
Grove Music Onlinee 1980 edition.
The print edition of the New Grove costs between $1,100 and
$1,500, while an annual subscription to Grove Music Online as of
October 23, 2009 is $295 which is kind of a costly

The Grove Dictionary of American Music

The Grove Dictionary of American Music, 2nd
edition is the largest, most comprehensive
reference publication on American Music.
Contains more than 9300 entries, including
4,800 new articles as well as revised articles and
bibliographies from the 1986 edition and Grove
Music Online 447 images and 137 music
examples provide dynamic context to research.

The Harvard Dictionary of MusicThis dictionary is aimed at all levels of
music enthusiasts. It's portable although a little heavy. It contains
substantial articles on non-Western music (Africa, East-Asia, etc.)

English dictionary of musical terms. Very good for a performer and
somewhat portable!
Russian-English dictionary of musical termsThis is the only Russian to
English dictionary of musical terms that I could find! It contains terms in
Cyrillic with definitions into English.
An English-Chinese Glossary of Terms Commonly Used in the Learning
and Teaching of MusicThis is a free online resource from the Hong Kong
Education Bureau. Provides definitions in Chinese to Western musical
terms.

Polish counterpart of Grove Dictionary is
Encyklopedia muzyczna PWM
It has been published by Polskie Wydawnictwo
Muzyczne since 1979 and consists of factual and
biographical parts.
Until 2012 it appeared in 12 volumes.
PWM published also some special volumes dedicated
to Fryderyk Chopin,Henryk Wieniawski, Henryk
Mikoaj Grecki.
The encyclopedia altogether comprises over 9700
entries on 6000 pages.


A mini version of it is Sowniczek Muzyczny
of Jerzy Habela
It comprises 2000 entries concerning the
theory of music, musical notation, acoustics,
study of instruments or musical forms.
Each entry consists of a short definition,
description, frequently a historical notion and
some information about how to apply a term
in music.
